📢 How do Citizens Perceive Circularity of Building Products: a case study in the Basque Country 📄 🌍 This June the international journal Building and Environment has published conclusions of the research led by Ihobe, Sociedad Pública de Gestión Ambiental del Gobierno Vasco, TECNALIA Research & Innovation and the University of the Basque Country – UPV/EHU in the framework of the Iceberg Project. ✍ The article authored by Ihobe, TECNALIA –partners of the ICEBERG Project– and the Department of Environmental Psychology of University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, focuses on how citizens perceive circularity of building products and highlights the importance of increasing socieltal knowledge for accepting circularity in construction. The authors of the paper are Karmele Herranz-Pascual, David García-Esteve, Laura Vozmediano, Jone Aliri, Olatz Goñi-Balentziaga and Iñaki Susaeta. Building and Environment  is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal on Building Science and its Applications. ♻ Reusing materials in the field of construction is an aspect of European environmental goals that cannot be overlooked. Little is currently known about public opinion as regards the use of those materials in construction; accordingly, this study seeks to establish citizen perception in that respect, but the aim is also to consolidate an instrument and an approach with which to expand the study focus to other European countries in the future. Six hundred and five citizens of the Basque Country were interviewed for that purpose. The results show that there is a gap between attitudes and behaviour; there is majority acceptance of the circularity of construction products, but that is no guarantee that the majority of the population are going to behave in such a way to support it. Therefore, there is a clear need to work on the most appropriate methodology to promote that behaviour. VIUDA DE SAINZ receives Lurra Bizkaia Saria award in the Climate Change category for its “Harri Green” project to treat and reuse CDW On 17 June, Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia gave out its Lurra Bizkaia Sariak 2024 awards, which recognise individuals, entities and companies whose outstanding work has a positive impact on sustainability. The company Viuda de Sainz – a member of the ICEBERG consortium – received an award in the Climate Change category for its “Harri Green” project, which features a new and advanced treatment and recovery plant for construction and demolition waste. The award was collected by José Manuel Baraibar , Director of R&D&I, and given out by Ana Otadui, President of the General Assembly of Bizkaia, at a ceremony attended by the President of the Basque Government Iñigo Urkullu. The companies Viuda de Sainz and Heidelberg Materials have joined forces to promote “Harri Green”, a waste treatment and recovery facility located in Zaramillo (Güeñes, Bizkaia), which officially opened in January this year. This facility is able to process 160,000 tonnes per year of construction and demolition waste (CDW) and an additional 100,000 tonnes of steel mill slag per year. Using an advanced three-stage crushing process, “Harri Green” turns this waste into recycled aggregates that meet strict quality standards, and has become a benchmark for the promotion of the circular economy and sustainability in the region. The plant reduces the volume of waste sent to landfill and the carbon footprint. It also saves energy and reduces the environmental impact as materials are not extracted from quarries. 📢📢The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) presents a catalogue compiling around 100 cutting-edge technologies In order to mark World Intellectual Property Day, which is held every year on 26 April, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), which is a member of the ICEBERG project, has presented a catalogue compiling around 100 of its cutting-edge technologies in areas of knowledge such as agriculture, biotechnology, energy and materials. The technologies presented are at an advanced stage of development, use innovative approaches and offer many advantages compared to the technologies that are already commercialised, making them well positioned for transfer to the market with the aim of contributing to the development of society. In the field of new materials, and as part of the ICEBERG project, a structural ceramic material has been obtained from demolition waste in a sustainable way. It is a ceramic tile manufactured at the Keraben production plant using raw materials, 55% of which come from construction and demolition waste (CDW). This proves that it is possible to reduce the consumption of raw materials in a process that involves lower energy costs. This tile also includes new traceability technology with a QR code embedded on its surface, visible only under UV light. The advantages of this technology include the reuse of waste that is currently used in very low-value applications (road embankment fillings), and its recovery as secondary raw material, generating new types of ceramic products in sustainable circular economy processes. #circularConstruction #circulareconomy CSIC Technologies Catalogue 2024: https://lnkd.in/d2xYVNSJ
