The Youth Development Program recently embarked on their first college visit of the summer at Boston University! Our youth had an incredible time touring the campus and speaking with current students about their experiences. A special thank you from our peer leaders to the Boston University Howard Thurman Center for the opportunity to hear from thoughtful staff and students on life after high school.

About us
“We shall not move from Parcel 19” IBA is a non-profit organization and a dynamic community-building agency that started in the South End neighborhood of Boston, to address displacement of low-income families due to urban development. IBA offers affordable housing and supportive programming to improve the knowledge, life skills and health of participants of all ages. One of the most important goals of IBA is urban planning. For more than four decades, IBA has facilitated housing that is associated and financed by different supportive programs, while developing leaders who support and encourage themselves, their families and their neighbors. How we started? In 1968, the inhabitants of the Parcel 19 in the South End organized, and with the support of hundreds of protesters, they fought to stop the displacement they were facing. They finally won this battle, which not only allowed their people to keep their homes but also gave them the right to control and develop their community. IBA then developed Villa Victoria, a 435 unit affordable housing community in the city’s South End neighborhood, and it immediately became an example in the areas of civil rights, social organization, affordable housing and arts programs. It is a daily reminder of what it can be achieved with effort, determination and social awareness; the legacy of those brave Puerto Rican activists have been recognized for over four decades and continue to be referenced.

Plaza Betances was the place to be this past Saturday for the 2024 Festival Betances: Un Verano en Betances! For the 51st year, New England's oldest and largest Latinx cultural celebration brought vibrant music, delicious food, and incredible community spirit to Boston. We are still in awe at the energy that radiated throughout the crowd and want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and made this year's festival one to remember. A huge shoutout to our spectacular lineup of performers: the legendary Charlie Aponte, the dynamic Pirulo Y La Tribu, the soulful Luis Matos Burgos, the talented Zayra Pola, and the powerhouse EhShawnee. Your performances brought so much excitement to the day! Thank you to the vendors, generous sponsors and outstanding media partners, Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra | wneu and La Mega, who shared their talented anchors with us as guest emcees! Great to visit IBA and Villa Victoria yesterday, and connect with my longtime friend and CEO Vanessa Calderon-Rosado as they prepare for Saturday’s Betances Festival, New England’s longest-running Latino cultural festival. The mural in the background will be one of many vibrant works of art celebrating the diversity of Latinx culture.

It was a great honor to join the Mel King Institute for Community Building as they celebrated their 15th anniversary of fostering learning, innovation, and networking across the Massachusetts community development field. One of the highlights from the event was the powerful poetry of Joliné Brito, a remarkable 17-year-old spoken word poet from Roxbury who is a Peer Leader in IBA's Youth Development Program. Her voice has become a testament to the strength and spirit of our communities. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event one filled with reflection, celebration, and inspiration. As the Mel King Institute continues to grow, we remain incredibly proud to support their mission to cultivate vibrant communities throughout Massachusetts.
