Milwaukee's Urban Alternative Channel powered by 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. Connecting The Culture

About us

A hyphen is a connector that brings two words together. That’s how HYFIN will function – as a bond between multiple styles of Black music, connecting the culture. The name also represents the multiplicity of identities in our community. Like the music we will play, our community cannot fit neatly into a single box. We are artist-mothers-dancers, friend-foodies-gamers, runner-DJs-entrepreneurs. Rather than trying to find a name that encapsulates all of our hopes for this channel, we embraced an identity that emphasizes the multitude of the Black experience. From June 19 to July 3, HYFIN will be unhosted except for Moody’s shift, allowing listeners to enjoy the depth and intentionality of the music programming of HYFIN. Beginning July 4, the weekday programming schedule on HYFIN will be as follows: 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. – “The Morning Mix,” Milwaukee’s most music morning show with no talk and all tunes 12 to 3 p.m. – Anthony Foster 3 to 9 p.m. – Element Everest-Blanks 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. – Tarik Moody, simulcast on 88.9FM HD1 and HD2 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. – Unhosted, simulcast on 88.9FM HD1 and HD2 HYFIN will be unhosted on the weekends and will be simulcast on 88.9FM HD1 seven days a week from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. HYFIN can be found on Facebook (@hyfinmke), Twitter (@hyfinmke), and Instagram (@hyfin.mke); or online at hyfin.org.

In country music, where Black voices have long been underrepresented, songwriter Alice Randall’s latest project, “My Black Country – The Songs of Alice Randall,” is a beacon of change. The album, released alongside Randall’s memoir of the same name, celebrates the Black roots and ongoing influence in the genre while showcasing the immense talent of contemporary Black female artists. Among the standout tracks is “Girls Ride Horses,” performed by the Milwaukee natives SistaStrings. SistaStrings, comprised of sisters Monique and Chauntee Ross, has been making waves in the music industry with their captivating performances and collaborations with renowned artists such as Brandi Carlile and Allison Russell. “Girls Ride Horses,” written by Alice Randall herself, is a powerful affirmation of women’s empowerment and the breaking of gender stereotypes. The song’s title and theme challenge traditional notions of masculinity in country music, asserting that girls, too, can engage in activities like horseback riding. SistaStrings‘ heartfelt duet with Randall brings the message to life, their voices intertwining in a beautiful harmony that resonates with listeners.

As Black Maternal Health Week 2024 highlights the ongoing disparities in maternal health outcomes, it's noteworthy that a Wisconsin hospital has been recognized for its efforts to improve Black maternal health. While the state faces challenges in addressing racial inequities in maternal and infant mortality rates, this hospital's work serves as an example of the progress being made and a model for other healthcare facilities to consider. However, it's essential to acknowledge that the recognition of a single hospital emphasizes the need for more widespread, systemic changes to address the underlying causes of these disparities, including racism and social determinants of health. We must continue to advocate for policies, practices, and investments prioritizing the health and well-being of Black mothers and families across Wisconsin and the nation.
