This week, let's discuss model accuracy and things to watch out for when first modeling a new well without any offset data to calibrate to. In this Training Module, let's look at the effect of three basic modeling parameters (Eccentricity, TJ's and RPM), and how they can change modeled ECD values, as well as list some of the other inputs that are used to calibrate hydraulic models, such as efa, Pd, mud specs, etc. Talk to HXR Drilling Services - Extended Reach Drilling or SafeKick about how we can provide Well Design, Operations Training, MPD Services, and Rigsite Engineering solutions for your upcoming ERD, Complex, Horizontal, Narrow-Margin, or Deepwater wells. #oilgas #oilandgas #oilfield #offshoredrilling

About us
HXR Drilling Services is an integrated ERD /Complex / Horizontal / MPD Drilling Engineering & Geomechanics / Pore Pressure Services consultancy. We provide Horizontal/Complex Well, Extended Reach (ERD), and Deepwater Drilling Engineering Design and Field Services, as well as Pore Pressure Prediction and Wellbore Stability/Geomechanics Modeling and Rigsite Services. Our ERD group uses ERDPro™, our proprietary advanced well design software. Our Pore Pressure group uses DeepwaterPro™, our pore pressure prediction software that has the capability to detect/model expected pore pressure at multiple points along a 3D wellpath, rather than using a single seismic/sonic velocity stack. For complete 1D/3D Wellbore Stability Analysis and RT services, our Geomechanics group utilizes the complete module offerings of JewelSuite 3D™, the industries most advanced wellbore stability software suite. Both our engineering and geoscience teams provide Rigsite Drilling Services as well as detailed Well Design & Feasibility Studies that are conducted inhouse from our Anchorage and Houston office locations. We also provide our software to select operators for use by their drilling and G&G groups. In addition, HXR provides 2 and 3 day ERD Drilling Operations courses through our Training department. Unlike our competitors, our classes are not generalized - they are based off of the Well Design and Feasibility Studies conducted for our clients for their specific wells. Interesting paper on the effects Eccentricity has on ECD. If you've ever had modeled hydraulics that just didn't look quite right, like maybe your outputs were higher/lower than you expected, this may give some insight. As always, thank you to the authors for publishing their work.

A sometimes overlooked but extremely effective solution for getting 7" screens into production zones without having to force an 8.5" section deeper than it should go. Thank you to the authors for posting their writeup. https://lnkd.in/g6F9jAau

Last week, we discussed a way to rationalize ROP, either as a starting point for planning purposes, as a perceived "safe ROP", or as a way to compare offsets. This week, let's examine the concept of "Staying in the Box", and how drag trend analysis is one tool in the toolbox for judging if your Hole Cleaning System is in equilibrium or if you might need to make some input parameter changes.

Too often, these Drilling Hazard charts are buried as an appendix somewhere at the back of the Drilling Program slideshow presentation; they need to be blown up, laminated, and put up on the wall in the doghouse and the pre-tour meeting room for reference. Thanks to the author for posting.

Something to think about if you're drilling sands or other formations that easily washout. Might also consider bypassing some of your flow above the BHA. Thank you to the authors for posting their research. #drilling #drillingengineering #offshore #directionaldrilling #oilgas #oilandgas #offshoredrilling https://lnkd.in/gpEtJ3ie

Geomechanics 37: Excellent review of the basic effects of 3D forces on vertical and lateral wellbores. Are there other factors like bedding plane intercept angles, multiple faulting regimes, etc.? Sure - but this gives a baseline to start thinking about your well trajectories from. Thanks to the authors for posting their study.

"We don't want to go over 100 fph in this section. We've tried to really push it in the past and we either got hung up, stuck, or planted every time." Those words, or those similar to them, are pretty commonly heard by ERD Specialists when they arrive onboard a new project. We've talked extensively in the past about how training, fit-for-purpose well designs, rigsite/remote monitoring, and adequate drilling/tripping/connection procedures can negate these types of concerns, so this week we'll add yet another metric - in this module, let's look at Cuttings Concentration in various hole sizes using a range of flow rates, and see how it's not the ROP itself necessarily but more the ROP/Flowrate that should be focused upon. Hopefully, some of the examples will be close enough to YOUR well that you can make the connection. Worried that you're "outdrilling" yourself? Consider using Cuttings Concentration as a STARTING POINT, then do EVERYTHING else right, monitor your drag trends - and see if you can't push the limit successfully. Start gradually and work up to it. If you have, say, a 20 well drilling program, and your 5th one is little better than your 1st, it's time to re-evaluate. Everything. Talk to HXR Drilling Services - Extended Reach Drilling or SafeKick about how we can help provide solutions for your upcoming ERD, Complex, Horizontal, Narrow-Margin, or Deepwater wells. #oilgas #oilandgas #oilfield #offshoredrilling

As we have discussed in the past, it is pretty common to use low-angle Exploration or even older, short-stepout ERD well designs as the basis for upcoming Complex or longer ERD wells. The problem is that doesn't always work out; usually from a Hole Cleaning, SPP or ECD standpoint. Once you realize that, then sometimes there is still the tendency to go down the path of "half-size" casing and underreaming virtually every hole size below Surface pipe; that is a rabbit hole you should really try to avoid if at all possible... But, like anything else, sometimes it can't be helped. In this module, let's take a look at the difference in flowrates needed to clean various hole sizes, using a 150-200 fpm AV range as the design criteria (we'll assume you can get the RPM required - that is not always a given...). Then we'll discuss ways to mitigate some of the issues that come up. The exact scenario likely won't match your well, but it is guaranteed that the variable effect seen will translate.
