📢Here at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System we are excited to announce our partnership with The Greater Wichita YMCA that will bring a new state-of-the-art Hutchinson YMCA facility to Reno County! This new facility, located on land donated by HRHS, will replace the current Y branch and aims to strengthen community health and well-being. The new YMCA will feature an aquatics center, indoor track, gymnasium, expanded gymnastics center, fitness studios, community room, and a childcare center. My life has been interrupted lately by medical needs, and I just got off the phone with the lovely person doing surgery intake for my upcoming procedure. I feel new calm and confidence about the journey ahead of me because they were competent, thorough, so deeply kind, so warmly human. It was the care I got during and following my quite traumatic surgery a few years ago that made me want to work at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. It was my first significant medical procedure, and I was scared spitless. The calm I felt while lying on the cold surgery table because I’d been connected with as a person in every interaction, informed of everything they were about to do, and ensured even moments before starting anesthesia that I still felt good about going through with this… it was life-changing. When I started my career at HRMC, I had no idea I’d be a frequent flyer as a patient in the next few years, but every single time I am back in the tunnel of pain pre-surgery and healing up post-, I am grateful beyond words for the level of care this amazing team of people offers our community on some of the most vulnerable days of their lives. Being on the receiving end of care makes me more proud than ever to make my career here and support the vital work of healthcare in central Kansas.

In the face of adversity, this team has improved wait times, improved quality of care and remains an active partner in making our organization and system the best place to work and our community mentally and physically healthier. For these reasons, we recognize our ER Team as this month’s Mission Moment recipients! This team courageously steps into their calling everyday to provide care amongst the chaos. What most do not know is that on any given day one ER Team Member could have a code blue, be cussed out by a patient, physically assaulted, and need to de-escalate an unpredictable person suffering from behavioral health issues. “We have to be ready for anything,” explains ER Manager, Scott Harris. “No one trains you for the situations and types of people who come to the emergency room for care. No nurse is taking self defense or de-escalation classes, still we call on them to handle people’s abuse and just accept it as part of the job.” We are so grateful for our ER Team, and their continued dedication to providing exceptional care!

On June 26th, 5:30-6:30pm at the Hutchinson Public Library, the Mental Health Task Force will present on mental health. On July 10th, 5:30-6:30pm at the Wool Market, Dakotah Sanders, Author and ACT Peer Support Specialist at Horizons Mental Health Center will present on substance misuse. On July 24th, 5:30-6:30pm at the Wool Market, David Jordan, President and CEO of United Methodist Health Ministry Fund will present on child care.

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. This month our dedicated team members have worked hard to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding behavior health issues, and highlight the ways that mental illness and addiction can effect all of us- patients, providers, families, and our communities. #mentalhealthmatters 💚
