🌼 Another day, another DAISY! 🌼 We surprised Vickie Owens, RN, with our highest nursing honor after receiving multiple glowing emails from Progressive Surgery Unit III patients and their loved ones. For one patient needing a new central line, Vickie worked the phones until she found the perfect replacement part and then drove to another HH facility to pick it up. “She put herself out and made sure we had the most optimal solution – not just an acceptable one,” the patient’s family said. “That is exceptional service from an exceptional nurse!” Another patient said Vickie “went above and beyond the call of duty” to help control a scary bleeding situation. “If there were more people like Vickie in the world, it would be a better place. I’ve been hospitalized an awful lot, and she is the best nurse yet.” Please help us congratulate Vickie on her well-earned DAISY Award! 💚🏆💪

🛠️ We are continually expanding and improving our downtown campus to keep up with the Rocket City’s dramatic growth. 📈 For the past year, we have been remodeling nearly 10,000 square feet of clinical space on the 4th floor with new flooring, central air and heat, energy-efficient windows and more. Here’s a sneak peek at the upgrades before our Progressive Surgery Unit I team moves back in. 👀

Our doctors are more than top-notch caregivers; many are also teachers. 👨🏫 Dermatologically-trained family practitioner D. Kishore Yellumahanthi, MD, is a great example. In his spare time, he has been writing a medical guide aimed at helping other primary care physicians diagnose and treat skin problems. His “Manual of Primary Care Dermatology” will be published globally this fall. 🌎📖 In addition to being an author, he leads our Physician Care-Airport Road Skin Clinic and serves on the medical school teaching (adjunct) faculty at UAB, Vanderbilt and the University of South Alabama. #WeAreAlabamaHospitals

We are pleased to introduce Katelyn Pace, MSN, RN, as the new director of our Medical Intensive Care Unit. Katelyn's journey into nursing began unexpectedly, following a suggestion from her father to consider it as a career. She says her late mother's chronic health issues, and the care she received, motivated her and molded her into the nurse she is today. Katelyn worked her way through nursing school as a certified nursing assistant. Her first job after becoming a registered nurse was on a neuro-stroke unit in Virginia Beach. In 2018, she returned to the Rocket City 🚀 and began caring for critically ill patients in our Medical ICU. After earning her master's degree in Nursing Leadership & Management, she was promoted to clinical educator. Katelyn grew up in Scottsboro and enjoys Peloton bike rides 🚲, crocheting 🧶, and spending time on the Tennessee River with her husband and family.

The Huntsville Hospital Foundation team is incredibly saddened over the loss of our esteemed board member and former COO of Huntsville Hospital, Chuck Stokes, who passed away on July 23. Chuck was a servant leader, visionary, mentor, dear friend and colleague to many. He was committed to making a positive difference for his community, and his impact has proven to be truly immeasurable. Chuck’s contributions to Huntsville Hospital Health System and our Foundation stretch far and wide. While Chuck achieved many extraordinary accomplishments in his life, we know that his greatest honor and joy was being a husband to his wife, Judy, and father to his three children Neil, Joshua, and Sidney. Just last year, Chuck and Judy became the catalyst for a project that has redefined the patient experience at Huntsville Hospital Breast Center. Thanks to the Stokes, women now wear a warm robe instead of an awkward and cold hospital gown while they await their mammogram and results. Their generosity continues to give comfort, love and care to so many. This gift is only a glimpse of the inspiring legacy of philanthropy and compassion that Chuck leaves behind. We will honor his memory by continuing to pursue the values and vision he championed. Please join us in keeping Chuck’s family in your thoughts during this time.
