Poke a stick at a grizzly bear, dress up like a moose in hunting season... This is priceless.

Last week I promised I'd share my favorite public messaging campaign to positively influence behavior. This one is guaranteed to put a smile on your dial. A while back, I was engaged by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC to research public messaging campaigns to determine key factors for success and to create helpful guidance. As part of the research, I came across this gem. The Dumb Ways to Die campaign breaks the mold using humor to influence behavior - promoting rail safety for Metro Rail in Melbourne. The quirky song and game went viral globally and reduced accidental rail deaths by more than 20%. If you haven't heard the song - check it out. It'll make your day: https://lnkd.in/gQfPQnYq In interviewing the Metro Trains Melbourne team and folk from the creative agency, I was most impressed with the courage it took for their team and their leadership to take a risk and try something different. Here's a quote from the case study in the guidance report from Chloe Alsop (formerly Metro Trains); "Have the courage to not think something ‘way out there’ is a bad idea. Too often you get the ‘Oh no, we couldn’t do that, we can’t have a song about safety, we can’t put the word die in it, no you’re making fun of it, safety is too serious for a cartoon.’ The negatives start and people shut ideas down. Ideas can come from anyone. You just don’t know where you’ll get the lead from and these ‘way out’ ideas can lead to crazy success.” Sometimes the greatest risk is sticking with the status quo and not giving something new a try, especially if the current approach is not connecting or giving the results you need.
