To truly support local actors, we must rethink this outdated structure. 2️⃣ 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 (𝟏-𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬) 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭. When funding ends, organizations often have to cease operations, break relationships with communities, and lay off staff. This disrupts trust-building, which requires long-term, stable partnerships. 3️⃣ 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 to cover true costs and provide #unrestrictedfunding to local organizations and actors who are deeply rooted in the communities they serve, supporting them to lead. 4️⃣ 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥. We need deep, reciprocal relationships between funders, implementers, and communities. Currently, the International Non-Profit Accounting Guidance (#INPAG) framework doesn't fully support NPOs in measuring #financialsustainability through their annual audited accounts, which causes a significant gap. Building an appropriate level of #generalreserves is essential for non-profits, as it creates a buffer to protect against financial shocks and helps manage gaps between grants.
