Promoting American leadership for a secure, free, and prosperous future.

About us

Hudson Institute is a non-partisan policy research organization dedicated to innovative research and analysis that promotes global security, prosperity, and freedom. Hudson Institute challenges conventional thinking and helps manage strategic transitions to the future through interdisciplinary and collaborative studies in defense, international relations, economics, culture, science, technology, and law. Through publications, conferences and policy recommendations, we seek to guide global leaders in government and business. Since our founding in 1961 by the futurist Herman Kahn, Hudson’s perspective has been uniquely future-oriented and optimistic. Our research has stood the test of time in a world dramatically transformed by the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rise of China, and the advent of radicalism within Islam. Because Hudson sees the complexities within societies, we focus on the often-overlooked interplay among culture, demography, technology, markets, and political leadership. Our broad-based approach has, for decades, allowed us to present well-timed recommendations to leaders in government and business, domestically as well as abroad. Hudson Institute has grown steadily-both in prestige and resources-from its origins in Croton-on-Hudson, to its tenure in Indianapolis, and now as a leading international policy organization with offices in Washington and New York. In the 1970s, Hudson’s scholars helped turn the world away from the no-growth policies of the Club of Rome; in the early 1990s, we helped the newly-liberated Baltic nations become booming market economies; at home, we helped write the pioneering Wisconsin welfare reform law that became the model for successful national welfare reform in the mid-1990s. Today, as part of our research agenda, we are developing programs of political and economic reform to transform the Muslim world.

In our paper for Hudson Institute, William Chou and I engage in a tabletop exercise to stress test the concept of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). The conclusion: it is critical to build out Shinzo Abe’s vision of FOIP, but doing so rests on the foundation of 🇺🇸 deterrence, especially in the Taiwan Strait. Building out FOIP over time could spread the burden of deterrence to other nations. Failing at deterrence will mark the end of FOIP.

First articulated by the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the free and open Indo-Pacific redefined Asia's geopolitics and helped counter the PRC. In their latest report, Ken Weinstein and William Chou examine FOIP's evolution and how to overcome potential shortcomings. Read: https://lnkd.in/e-zYi9mC

Head of Foreign Relations for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan

"We can't fight 21 terrorists groups, regional and global terrorist groups, without support." Earlier this week, I participated in a discussion at the Hudson Institute event, 'Resisting the Taliban and Preparing for the Future of Afghanistan.' During the event, a policy memo by Luke Coffey advocating for U.S. support for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRF) was released, followed by a powerful speech from Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the NRF. Here’s a short clip of my remarks from that discussion:

To deter Iran and its proxies from launching further attacks, the US has rushed ~18 warships and 2 aircraft carriers to the Middle East. I shared with Axios Reporter Colin Demarest that there are more than 500 Tomahawk missiles and over 100 aircraft ready to defend allies. Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dCks5RG9

In April 2024, the governments of the AUKUS security partnership announced their willingness to cooperate with Japan on advanced capabilities projects as part of AUKUS Pillar 2. To date, the group has set up eight such working groups in areas including artificial intelligence, information sharing, and hypersonic missile technology. Japan Chair Ken Weinstein sat down with Chris Brose of Anduril, Phoebe Greentree of the Australian Embassy, and Hudson's David Byrd and Masashi Murano to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Japan's potential participation in AUKUS Pillar 2. Four emerging disruptions will demand the attention of the next US president: 1. Growing collusion among revisionist powers 2. Climate alarmism and the green transition giving way to energy sobriety 3. A new realism about trade 4. The potential of AI Senior Fellow Nadia Schadlow lays out how policymakers can respond to these disruptions: https://lnkd.in/d9hn_Agx
