Our mission is to decrease the trauma of homelessness and domestic violence; and to provide strength-based, family-family focused and culturally-appropriate prevention and intervention services to children, youth, parents, and families; and to increase the strength and effectiveness of HCN’s collaborative efforts. Homeless Children's Network provides comprehensive on-site mental health, family support, community development and education, and early childhood mental health consultation services for homeless children, youth, and their families at emergency, domestic violence and transitional shelters, as well as single room occupancy hotels (SROs), schools, childcare centers, and permanent supportive housing sites.

From 2019 to 2024, nine Bay Area nonprofits came together across three Magic Cabinet cohorts to share ideas, build camaraderie, and collectively resource each other with capacity-building funding. We understand the unique challenges faced by Black women during pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. Our program is here to support, educate, and uplift every mother-to-be in our community. The Black Birthing Health Initiative offers: Culturally Competent Care: Personalized support from healthcare professionals, midwives, and doulas who understand and respect the cultural and personal needs of Black mothers. Educational Workshops: Sessions on prenatal health, childbirth options, and postpartum recovery, designed to empower Black women with knowledge and confidence. Community Support Groups: A safe space to connect with other mothers, share experiences, and receive emotional and practical support throughout the maternity journey. HCN’s CEO Dr. April Y. Silas was overjoyed to participate in the Health & Homelessness Deep Dive with the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative last week. Dr. Silas presented “Learning to Listen: Elevating Black Voices to End Homelessness” and passionately described the abridged timeline between Blackness and homelessness, looking at the relationship between the atrocious treatment of Africans throughout the Diaspora and current homelessness in the Black community.

We recently came across an enlightening article by the The Bridgespan Group Group, shedding light on the pressing mental health crisis in the U.S. and the crucial role of philanthropy in addressing it. 📈The statistics are alarming: 42% of high school students grappling with persistent sadness, 22 percent seriously considered attempting suicide, 58 million adults facing mental illness, and a significant rise in mental health challenges across diverse and marginalized communities.
