Building the future of the direct air capture industry.

About us

Holocene is a direct air capture (“DAC”) technology developer and carbon removal service provider harnessing organic chemistry, and the abundant elements therein – carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen – to remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere in support of restoring the climate stability and prosperity of our namesake, the Holocene Epoch. Our liquid-based, low-temperature, thermochemical approach has the potential to be the lowest cost direct air capture system on the market, according to independent, third-party analysis (CICE, IBET - 2024).

While we're not in the movie business, we're honored to be awarded a 2024 R&D 100 award... colloquially known as the "Oscars of Innovation" 🌟 Alongside researchers Costas Tsouris, Radu Custelcean, Abishek Kasturi, Ph.D., and more... Holocene's approach to direct air capture (DAC) has been recognized by R&D - Research & Development World for the second time since 2021. The R&D 100 Awards honor science and technology resarch and development leading to commercial products, technologies, and materials available for sale or license and have done so over the past 60 years. ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer said "The R&D 100 Awards showcase the far-reaching and impactful work they do to address national challenges through science and technology.” We agree, Stephen! Learn more about the award and fellow ORNL-connected honorees here: https://lnkd.in/ghCFAUfe Congratulations to all the awardees nationwide! 👏

Public-private partnerships have, and will continue to, drive forward the energy and industrial transitions. Thanks to the Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs for hosting our Co-founder & CEO Anca Timofte on a panel for this important regional dialogue.

The second annual Southeast Energy Policy Forum, hosted by the Center for Energy, Transportation and Environmental Policy, continued at the Baker School on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024. The forum included a keynote address by U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, Congressman for Tennessee’s 3rd District. Discussions followed about infrastructure, clean energy, and research. 📢 🏙 Keep an eye out for our co-founders Anca Timofte and Tobias Rüesch at next week's NETL Carbon Management Meeting in Pittsburgh. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has been an important supporter in our scale-up journey to date, and we commend their continued leadership. You can hear about our work and progress on... 1️⃣ FOA 2614 2️⃣ Pre-Commercial Tech Prize (Phase I) 3️⃣ Black & Veatch Ignite-X Accelerator (DOE supported) 4️⃣ 🆕 DOE Office of Technology Transitions CLIMR Projects -- a new collaboration for Holocene, alongside NETL, ORNL, LANL, and Avnos. Our team has shared a few “big day” posts… but this week, May 8th, marked the BIGGEST (yet). We unveiled, & operated, our first DAC pilot for the world. We were grateful to bring together nearly 100 attendees from within and outside of Knoxville to witness this major milestone – both for our company, and we hope, for the planet. For the majority of attendees, they had never seen a direct air capture facility before. Let alone, seen one operate... in real time, with real data, in real life. This day was the culmination of countless hours, tireless work, and limitless ingenuity from the entire Holocene team to turn an idea into a reality. The work doesn’t stop here – we’ve scaled up 100,000x… and we’ve got another 100,000x to go to reach megatonne scale facilities. We’re sharing a few pictures, and live video from the technology demonstration, so our broader community can celebrate this accomplishment with us, as well. Today, we're fortunate to add climate leaders from Klarna, Spotify, Atomico, Mentimeter, and more to our supporter list via a Milkywire award! The folks at Milkywire, led by Robert Höglund, orchestrated a thoughtful, fair, and competitive process to determine how they could most catalytically deploy capital into the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) space. We're grateful to be a part of this year's cohort and look forward to delivering on the CDR services that Milkywire is contracting. Congrats to our fellow innovators, and read on here: Milkywire PR: https://lnkd.in/g5Ck4nMA Klarna Sustainability: https://lnkd.in/eeyp7nbm

As we continue to grow our presence and build a home base in TN, the Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council has been a bastion for the new energy economy being built within the state and beyond! We are grateful that organizations like this exist and honored to hold membership and share our story with our fellow members. Learn more below! cc Anca Timofte

2024 Annual Meeting New Member Highlight: Holocene ⚡ We were pleased to have Anca Timofte, co-founder and CEO of Holocene, featured as this year’s new member highlight. At Holocene, Timofte and her team use organic chemistry to create an effective CO2 removal system. As a developer of direct air capture technology and a provider of carbon removal services, Holocene is working on a scalable, low-temperature system that efficiently removes carbon from the atmosphere. They aim to significantly impact the fight against global warming by slowing and eventually reversing its effects. Holocene is part of #TAEBC’s Energy Network, which is operated in partnership with LaunchTN. Learn more about this year's Annual Meeting! 👇 https://brnw.ch/21wICqD Interested in becoming a member? Keeping the #CERAWeek highlights going into April with a #Recap 🤝 Last month, the “premiere global energy conference” delivered on its lofty ambitions! Holocene had the privilege of being one of the younger startups in the Innovation Agora (#agora) sessions within CERAWeek. A few highlights for our network... [1] Climate innovation is taking off – as demonstrated by thousands of companies and attendees, and overflowing sessions at the Innovation Agora sessions (the innovation-focused portion of CERAWeek) [2] Carbon management was one of three core themes - direct air capture, carbon utilization, and the broader, emerging carbon management industry took center stage… alongside the Hydrogen Hub and the Climate (aka ecosystem) Hub. [3] Low-temperature DAC matters  – we’re grateful for all of those who stayed right until the end of Agora to hear the presentation our CEO Anca Timofte gave, the many visitors who stopped by Holocene’s innovation kiosk, and the clear interest in the continuous, low-temperature carbon removal approach we are pioneering. The direction of travel is clear. The path will not be easy… but the intersection of incumbents and innovators will help make a sustainable energy future a reality.
