Last week we cut the ribbon on our 3rd book locker, this one stationed at the Hoboken Historical Museum. But this isn't your ordinary locker! This is New Jersey's first remote library locker - a standalone library locker installed independent of library branch. The wrap is a specially commissioned design by Hoboken artist McKevin Shaughnessy; the front are photos of mascarons, the architectural faces adorning building facades in town, while the sides are our new branding. BCCLS Executive Director Dave Hanson said it best: “This is not just an amazing technological marvel, but a bulwark of the fight for freedom because this, ladies and gentlemen, is as important as anything because it is access.”

Hoboken residents can now pick up and drop off library books without having to leave uptown, thanks to the newly unveiled Hoboken Public Library locker outside the Hoboken Historical Museum. It is the first offsite, 24/7 library book locker in New Jersey, allowing Hoboken Public Library cardholders to order books and have them delivered to a designated slot in the locker. Library Director Jennie Pu said the library had been diligently working on this project for about a year and a half with HHM Director Bob Foster, the Board of Directors, property owners, constituents, and the City of Hoboken. “Really this is a response to Hobokenites coming to the library, asking: ‘We need an Uptown location. It’s too far to walk an hour down with my stroller," said Pu. "This is the state’s first 24/7 library locker that’s remote which means it’s not at a library location." More: https://lnkd.in/dQu8t_x9

Thrilled to be the first -and certainly not the last! - New Jersey library to receive this national grant. Thank you American Library Association for supporting our Homelessness Advisory Group, a monthly program that empowers unhoused patrons by collaborating with them to provide essential and responsive tools and resources. https://lnkd.in/eT2NFYED

Wow! Over 7,500 library workers from all around the country convened in Columbus Ohio for the 2024 Public Library Association conference #PLA2024. We presented, we learned and we shared library love with none other than Mychal Threets and so many of our colleagues and friends.

We brought the heat🌶 to Columbus at #PLA2024! From burning issues in library operations to social work outreach to library joy with Mychal Threets, our Hoboken Public Library team shared and laughed and took it all in. And I was so happy to celebrate Lance Werner and the fabulous KDL team at the Klein-Impact award ceremony hosted by Library Journal. 🎉

In case you missed this great news: This month, the Library of Congress announced the third cohort of the Connecting Communities Digital Initiative's (CCDI) Higher Education and Libraries, Archives, and Museums awardees — which includes ULC members DC Public Library and Hoboken Public Library! The CCDI is part of the Library’s Of the People: Widening the Path program with support from the Mellon Foundation. The four-year program provides financial and technical support to individuals, institutions, and organizations to create imaginative projects using the Library’s digital collections and centering one or more of the following groups: Black, Indigenous, Hispanic or Latino, Asian American, and Pacific Islander, and other communities of color. DCPL will collaborate with artist Tsedaye Makonnen to highlight the stories of DC’s Ethiopian residents across generations and identities, while Hoboken Public Library will explore the histories and relationships between the United States and Puerto Rico, with an emphasis on 1960s emigration from the island to Hoboken. Read more about these initiatives: https://lnkd.in/e4w7k5SX

Grateful to Bill Ritter at abc7NY for speaking with me at Hoboken Public Library about book sanctuaries and raising attention about the freedom to read. Proud of our designation as the first book sanctuary library and city in New Jersey, and of the 8 sister NJ libraries who have since joined the movement in becoming book sanctuaries for their communities. #freedomtoread #booksanctuary #hoboken #jersey #libraries #ala #publiclibraries

The Hoboken Public Library unveiled its newly renovated third floor on Saturday in the first of a multi-phased renovation and restoration project of the 130-year-old main building. The $7 million project included a newly restored children’s room, an enlarged space for teenagers and the city's first public makerspace in partnership with nonprofit Hoboken Makerbar. The ceilings and windows were also renovated and an upgraded HVAC system was installed. “For over 130 years the Hoboken Public Library has grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of an urban population but with a firm foundation on our founded history of education and public service,” said Pu. “This splendid $7 million renovation and restoration and HVAC is a major step in support of our mission to enhance community engagement and to make a lasting, meaningful impact that reaches all corners of our Mile Square City."
