In addition to the list of urgent needs Melanie Allen shares here, the Hive Fund is in conversation with grantee partners, allied funders, and other partners on the ground across the Southeast to identify ways philanthropy can support longer-term recovery efforts that also strengthen resilience, decrease climate-warming pollution, and address deep economic inequities in the region." Stay tuned.
I'm still making sense of what it means to go from celebrating 5 years of the Hive Fund and the incredible progress our partners have made at Climate Week to returning home to one of the worst disasters my beloved North Carolina has ever seen. Our hearts are with the people of Western North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and Florida who are weathering the storm and surviving the aftermath. I've spoken to and texted with so many folks searching for loved ones and wondering what is next. While our hearts are heavy and emotions are high, every single person has shared what they are already doing or asked how they can help. I'm reminded that in times like these when powerlines are down and our usual modes of communication may be severed, relationships are infrastructure. This particular disaster also dashes the illusion that there are any climate havens. Our fates are linked. From Asheville, to Nepal, to Acapulco and beyond, all of our homes and sacred places are in danger. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to do things differently. We can stop the expansion of fossil fuels and we can pull together in common purpose to reshape our economic and energy systems as we rebuild resilient communities. Many are asking how they can help. You can find a few trusted organizations below. Please know that this recovery will be long and so I ask you not to turn away even as the news cameras do. https://lnkd.in/eAWcqsDN

Congratulations to Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud for this well-deserved recognition! Ayanna is an artist, policy advocate, mother, and community steward who stepped into the Executive Director role at Bayou City Waterkeeper and brought a vision and roadmap for racial justice to the water world. She's led the organization through developing its core values and a strategic plan that among many brilliant initiatives incorporates art as a tactic for narrative change. Water landscapes, she reminds us, have always been avenues for Black liberation. Recently, BCWK's Sewage Justice campaign brought real life stories of residents dealing with broken and aged sewage lines in their backyards to the Houston city council. This deep community level partnership will shape local, state, and national water policy agendas.
We’re thrilled to announce the awardees and finalists of the 2024 Rachel’s Network Catalyst Award. It’s been a great honor getting to know these powerhouse environmental leaders. Now you can too—visit https://lnkd.in/eDay6N7t to learn more. Did you know that less than 1% of foundation grants go to women and girls of color? Now in its sixth year, the Catalyst Award has granted $1.7 million to 120 women of color environmental leaders and their organizations.

We celebrated the powerful role of Southern climate justice leaders in global climate action today alongside over 100 partners and funders at our first ever #climateweek event in New York! Georgia Conservation Voters’ Brionte McCorkle spoke to a packed room about organizing for democratic reforms at state and local agencies that are key to Inflation Reduction Act implementation, clean energy development, and environmental justice; and Roishetta Sibley Ozane, M.S. of the Vessel Project of Louisiana and Gulf South Fossil Finance Hub shared her work elevating frontline communities from Texas and Louisiana in partnership with global allies to hold the line on a massive wave of new gas export projects. Thanks to everyone who joined us, and to our long-time funding partner Fondation CHANEL for their partnership in hosting the event.

The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice reposted this
Erin Rogers, the The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice team and I are honored to be recognized as the team recipient of the Environmental Grantmakers Association Risk Taker Award. It is even sweeter to do so alongside partners, colleagues and friends we deeply admire. Thank you Environmental Grantmakers Association for your commitment to equity and justice in this field. Thank you, Tamara Toles O'Laughlin for your continued leadership. Thanks to our staff, grantee partners and advisors who demonstrate everyday why we must reframe our thinking about “risk” in the philanthropic space and do the work we know is necessary to accelerate climate action and move us towards justice.
At the #EGAretreat Awards Ceremony this morning, we were pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 Donald K. Ross Founders Award and EGA Risk Taker Award! 👏 Congratulations to Crystal Hayling, former Executive Director of the Libra Foundation, for winning the Donald K. Ross Founders Award! Crystal’s 30 year career in philanthropy is marked by a start-up energy and pugilist spirit exemplified by Donald. Her leadership in launching the Democracy Frontlines Fund mobilized funds to Black-led grassroots groups and challenged philanthropy to utilize trust-based approaches to fund racial justice efforts. 👏Congratulations to Helen Chin, President of the Communities First Fund, for her cross-sector transformative leadership, which we honor with the EGA Risk Taker Award in the individual recipient category! Helen has transformed how government and philanthropy can collaborate to invest public dollars in low-wealth and BIPOC communities. Communities First provides a replicable platform that makes philanthropy more effective in actualizing the goals of Justice40. 👏Congratulations to Melanie Allen and Erin Rogers, Co-Directors of The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice, for their innovative leadership in the sector, which we honor with the EGA Risk Taker Award in the team recipient category! Co-Directors Melanie and Erin, have created an innovative regranting intermediary funding at the intersection of climate, racial and gender justice. The Hive Fund challenges conventional philanthropic practice by leading with trust and abundantly resourcing its grantee partners to leverage federal dollars. 🥳 Join us in celebrating Crystal, Helen, Melanie, and Erin for their leaderful contributions to equitably resource communities for healthy people and planet!

Landfills account for 14 percent of US methane emissions, and can be a major source of water and soil contamination in neighboring communities. On September 3, following a decades-long battle to address environmental issues at the Sampson County landfill in North Carolina, one of the nation's largest, Environmental Justice Community Action Network (EJCAN) and its partners won major concessions from its operator for pollution monitoring, prevention, clean-up, and community reparations. Congratulations to Sherri White-Williamson and her colleagues on this incredible effort! https://lnkd.in/gtXGvAvf

It's our anniversary! The Hive Fund launched five years ago this month when Melanie Allen and Erin Rogers came on as our first co-directors. Today we're a mighty team of ten, moving $30M a year to groups on the frontlines of the climate crisis in the US South who are innovating solutions that not only reduce pollution but also create economic opportunity and build wealth in historically disinvested communities. We're so grateful for the collective “hive” of advisors, grantee partners, funders, staff, and so many other allies and supporters who continue to make this work possible.

Big shout out to Ajulo Othow for being named a #Grist50 fixer for her visionary leadership in putting solar to work for rural communities in the South. Her company EnerWealth Solutions, LLC, partnered with Roanoke Cooperative to install solar and batteries on Black-owned small farms in North Carolina, providing a long-term stable revenue source. “Our utility has been benefiting from renewable energy generation for more than a decade,” she said. “It is important that everyday people also benefit from this technology.” https://lnkd.in/gTsTnJRw.
