    In canned motor pumps, the bearings are surrounded by the pumped liquid. The bearing sliding surfaces do not touch each other, so they work without wear during continuous operation. But what if, as in the chemical, petrochemical or energy sectors, media with low viscosity are used that reduce the load-bearing capacity of the slide bearings? In such cases we recommend placing the pump vertically. The slide bearings then only have a guiding function, while the runner's weight is supported hydrodynamically. For vertical installation, a special contactless magnetic support bearing developed by HERMETIC is used. This is based on two powerful magnetic rings that keep the rotating and stationary units contact-free at a defined distance. The magnetic rings are configured in such a way that wear-free and maintenance-free operation is guaranteed even with frequency controls, frequent start and stop intervals, extreme operating parameters or the temporary conveyance of gas.     HERMETIC supplies the right pump for every application. The most recent example: the CAMT 41/6 6, which is being prepared for shippment. The task of this canned motor pump is to convey MMA in water to a height of 440 m. To achieve this, it was constructed as a tandem with 6 stages on each side. Since there are correspondingly high system pressures inside the pump, a pressure barrel is used as an additional safety cover.     Over 50 years of experience in the field of pumps and ammonia In addition to various safety aspects, issues of environmental protection and plant efficiency are also coming to the fore. HERMETIC supports plant manufacturers with hermetically sealed canned motor pumps that perfectly combine safety, efficiency and environmental protection. Let's take a look at a typical ammonia compression refrigeration system with its most important components: 1. The compressor is responsible for drawing in & compressing the gaseous ammonia. 2. The condenser is the component in which the gaseous, compressed ammonia is cooled. In doing so, it releases the absorbed heat into the environment & converts the ammonia back into a liquid form. 3. The expansion valve regulates the flow of liquid ammonia from the condenser to the evaporator. 4. The evaporator is the part of the refrigeration system in which the liquid ammonia evaporates and absorbs heat from the surrounding environment. A control system monitors and regulates the operation of the system. This includes controlling pressure, temperature & flow to ensure efficient & safe operation. Canned motor pumps of the type CAM, CAMR or CNF are used in such systems. These are single-stage or multi-stage pumps.     70 years of 🎂 canned motor pumps from HERMETIC! 🥂 In 1954, we manufactured the first canned motor pump! A good reason to briefly tell the story of this technology and the changing requirements. In 1913, the Swiss Benjamin Gräminger applied for a patent for his "Device for driving a working machine enclosed in a completely gas-tight housing". Unfortunately, no suitable material for the can existed at the time. Although stainless steel was available from the 1920s onwards, there was a lack of acceptance for this complex technology: environmental protection and occupational safety wasn’t really important at this time. The idea was forgotten. At the end of the 1940s, nuclear technology developed in the USA ⚛️ with its high safety requirements and Grüninger's invention was then used. Finally, the chemical industry🏭 also recognised the advantages of hermetically sealed canned motor pumps. In 1954, the Freiburg pump manufacturer Lederle - now HERMETIC - produced the first sealless canned motor pump in Europe (picture). We are still working successfully with chemical companies to which we supplied our first model. Together, we have realised countless pump types over seven decades and thus, contributed to safe and environmentally friendly production.     Sometimes tight is not tight enough. This is also the case with this three-stage canned motor pump CAMT 63/3, which is awaiting collection here in the dispatch centre. As it is intended to pump highly flammable gases at high pressures, we had to ensure the greatest possible tightness due to the process and therefore chose a pump model with a pressure barrel. The operating data of the CAMT 63/3 at a glance: ✅ Operating temperature of the conveyed fluid: 15 °C ✅ Conveying flow [Q]: 192 m³/h ✅ Head [H]: 281 m ✅ Motor type: N81w-2 / P2 at 122.0 kW ✅ Nominal pump pressure: PN 40 The CAMT 63/3 will soon be conveying propylene in a chemical application.     The Project Greensand was a pioneer in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology: In order to completely and permanently inject residual CO2 emissions captured and liquefied from an industrial plant under the seabed, they must first reach an injection platform. A canned motor pump from HERMETIC ensures reliable and leak-free pumping from the transport ships to the platform. The crucial thing is that, in contrast to conventional centrifugal pumps with mechanical seals, canned motor pumps do not require any vulnerable dynamic seals. Instead, they have a second hermetic security cover that prevents the leakage of conveyed media and emissions. In this energetically complex process, it is doubly important that any leaks along the CCS value chain are excluded. The choice fell on HERMETIC. The other advantages at a glance: ✅ Pump-motor combination in a compact unit eliminates the risk of incorrect shaft alignment ✅ A mechanical clutch and clutch protection as well as often the complex base plate construction are no longer necessary ✅ Lower space requirement: 50% reduction in installation space compared to a pump with an external motor - an important criterion for use on transport ships ✅ Long service life: Contact and wear-free running of the rotor unit thanks to HERMETIC technology "ZART" (Zero Axial and Radial Thrust).     Handling toxic and flammable substances often requires pumps that can be submerged in containers. Such submersible pumps are not only intended to offer maximum safety. They also have to meet the highest requirements in terms of durability, availability and MTBF, as once immersed in the medium they are difficult to access. In conventional submersible pumps, the motor is mounted outside the container and connected to the pump hydraulics with a correspondingly long drive shaft. Since these shafts have to be fixed using guide bearings, such pumps are maintenance-intensive and prone to failure. Canned motor pumps are different. Thanks to their hermetically sealed design, they can be immersed in the container together with the hydraulics and motor. Only the pressure pipe and the electrical connection are led out through the tank cap. Thanks to their design principle and their sophisticated monitoring technology, HERMETIC canned motor pumps run wear-free in continuous operation for years.     CO2 will be stored below the seabed in the future as a measure to counteract climate change. The fact that this “Carbon Capture and Storage” (CCS) is feasible was proven in 2023 as part of the Project Greensand: For the first time, the entire CCS value chain - capture, transport and storage of CO2 – implemented. A canned motor pump from HERMETIC ensured that the liquefied CO2 was safely transported from the transport ship to the injection platform in the Danish North Sea. To remain the delivered CO2 in the tanks liquid, it must be chilled and kept at a low pressure. At temperatures of -30°C to -40°C and a compression pressure of 14 – 20 bar, the CO2 is pumped from the ship to the injection platform. Due to the low temperature and high vapor pressure, there is a risk that gases could form and the pump could run dry. That's why Project Greensand decided on a canned motor pump type CAM 32/3 from HERMETIC. This series is optimized for conveying liquid gases and has already proven itself thousands of times in the refrigeration industry. The application grid for HERMETIC CAM variants includes pumping heads up to 295 m, capacities up to 40 m³/h, conveyed material temperatures from -40 to 120°C, output power up to 48 kW and operating pressure up to 40 bar. #Hermeticpumpen #Hermetic #pumps #carboncapture #netzero #CCS #CO2
