June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month Taking charge of your brain health is a proactive step toward maintaining cognitive function and reducing the risk of cognitive decline, Alzheimer's, and dementia. By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you can take meaningful steps toward maintaining and improving your brain health throughout June and beyond. Stay Physically Active: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and encourages the growth of new brain cells. Eat a Brain-Healthy Diet: Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Include foods high in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins. Get Quality Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Good sleep is crucial for brain health, as it helps consolidate memories and remove toxins from the brain. Stay Mentally Active: Challenge your brain with activities like reading, puzzles, learning new skills, or playing musical instruments. Stay Socially Engaged: Maintain strong social connections and engage in social activities. Social interaction can improve cognitive functions and emotional well-being. Manage Stress: Practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or mindfulness. Chronic stress can negatively impact brain health. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can accelerate cognitive decline. Keep Learning: Take up new hobbies or enroll in educational courses. Lifelong learning helps keep your brain sharp and adaptable. Protect Your Head: Wear helmets when biking, skiing, or engaging in contact sports to prevent head injuries. Use seat belts to reduce the risk of head trauma in accidents. Regular Health Checkups: Manage health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Regular checkups can help you stay on top of your health and prevent conditions that can affect your brain. #helmseniorcare #alzheimerssupport #alzheimersawareness #BrainAwarenessWeek #AgingGracefully #caregiversupport #SeniorCare iCarenetwork

Mental health in seniors is an important but often overlooked aspect of healthcare. As people age, they may face various challenges that can affect their mental well-being. Common issues include loneliness, grief from the loss of loved ones, chronic health conditions, cognitive decline, and changes in independence and mobility. Social isolation can be particularly detrimental to seniors' mental health. Retirement, loss of friends and family, and physical limitations can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. It's essential for seniors to stay socially connected through activities, community involvement, and maintaining relationships with friends and family. Promoting mental well-being in seniors involves a holistic approach that includes social support, physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and access to mental health services. It's essential to address mental health concerns in seniors with empathy, understanding, and appropriate support to help them maintain a good quality of life as they age. #helmseniorcare #mentalhealthawareness #MentalHealthMonth #caregiversupport #aginggracefully #caremanagement iCarenetwork

  • To finish out Occupational Therapy Month we would like to provide some indicators that you might benefit from occupational therapy. There is often some confusion as to the difference between Physical and Occupational therapy and at Helm we believe both are extremely helpful for some clients. Indicators you may benefit from Occupational Therapy - Difficulty Performing Daily Activities: If you struggle with everyday tasks such as dressing, grooming, cooking, or cleaning due to physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges, OT can help you regain independence. Physical Disabilities or Injuries: If you have physical disabilities or are recovering from injuries, OT can assist you in improving mobility, strength, and coordination. Chronic Health Conditions: People with chronic conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease may find OT helpful in managing symptoms and maintaining independence. Recovery from Surgery: Following surgery, OT can aid in rehabilitation by restoring movement, reducing pain, and increasing function. Memory Loss: Engagement in meaningful activities can stimulate cognitive function and promote well-being. Occupational therapists can design activities that challenge memory skills while also providing enjoyment and fulfillment. They can also teach individuals various memory strategies to compensate for memory deficits and even work to maximize individuals' independence in daily activities despite memory impairment. If you're experiencing challenges in any of these areas, consider consulting with Helm to help determine if occupational therapy services could benefit you. We work with some wonderful therapy partners that we would love to connect you with. #helmseniorcare #caremanagement #Seniors #occupationaltherapy #aginggracefully iCarenetwork

April is Parkinson's Awareness Month. Despite the challenges posed by Parkinson's disease (PD), there are numerous strategies and lifestyle adjustments that individuals can implement to maintain and enhance their quality of life. Stay Informed: Knowledge is power. Educate yourself and your loved ones about Parkinson's disease, including its symptoms, progression, available treatments, and management strategies. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with supportive family members, friends, and healthcare professionals who understand Parkinson's disease and can provide emotional support, encouragement, and practical assistance when needed. Stay Active: Regular physical activity is crucial for managing Parkinson's symptoms and maintaining overall health and well-being. Consider incorporating exercises that focus on balance, flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular fitness, such as walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, tai chi, or dancing. Medication Management: Work closely with your healthcare team to develop a personalized medication regimen that effectively manages your symptoms while minimizing side effects. Nutrition and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to support overall health and optimize medication effectiveness. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Manage Stress: Stress can exacerbate Parkinson's symptoms. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation exercises to promote calmness and reduce anxiety. Adapt Your Environment: Make modifications to your home and work environments to enhance safety and accessibility. Speech and Swallowing Therapy: Speech and swallowing difficulties are common in Parkinson's disease. Speech therapy and swallowing therapy can help improve communication, swallowing function, and overall quality of life. Stay Connected: Join a Parkinson's disease support group or participate in online forums to connect with others who are facing similar challenges. Stay Positive: Focus on the things you can control and maintain a positive outlook. Engage in activities that bring you joy, purpose, and fulfillment, and remember that living with Parkinson's disease does not define who you are. #helmseniorcare #parkinsonssupport #parkinsonsdisease #aginggracefully #caregiversupport #tipsandresources iCarenetwork
