Make the first move, make an analogy, make it personal! More gems from this week’s panel with Eastin, Abbie, and The Wharton School's Venture Lab on breaking the bias when pitching #Femtech, retail, and gender-focused solutions 💎👇 First & foremost: know your audience! If you can’t explain it to a 5yo, it’s too complicated. A quick “no” is a blessing - be thoughtful about who you take money from. You want longterm believers & partners! Write out hypotheses that must be true for your company to become huge (e.g. investor mindset, consumer behavior, regulatory change)…debate them! Building consumer products is really hard. Getting consumers to pay for things is even harder (especially in healthcare). Get clear on willingness to pay (note: waitlists are good signals but don’t equate to revenue). Remember: Venture capital is not the only path to funding a successful business, especially if you serve a niche market. Grants are a powerful option, especially in the healthcare space. Two market opportunities Abbie & Eastin are most excited about… 🔢 Consolidation of various existing features, products, and companies. 1 1 can = 3! 💉Precision medicine and therapeutics, especially for women. There’s still so much we don’t know and so much opportunity for innovation. A few bottom lines: Bias does not change without education and opening doors. Imposter syndrome is real (and we’re almost all experiencing it). Push someone forward or bring them with you 💪 Thanks again to Rebecca M. Winkler (PMP), Jill Anick (she/her), and team for having us! https://lnkd.in/ekzaZGD2
#Femtech is currently expected to grow to $103 billion by 2030. So why is it still so difficult for these founders to fundraise? Next week on October 2, HearstLab’s Venture Director Eastin Rossell will be joining a panel along with Abbie Strabala (True Wealth Ventures) and Rebecca M. Winkler (PMP) at The Wharton School’s Venture Lab to help University of Pennsylvania students hone their strategies for pitching and evaluating winning femtech, retail, and gender-focused products and services. We love seeing and supporting programs like the Venture Lab that are helping create a robust pipeline of next-level #entrepreneurs and #investors! Stay tuned for the recap 👀 P.S. While we have you, shout out to our HearstLab CEO/Wharton Alum network: Reham, Dana, & Shanel!

Today, HearstLab's Eastin Rossell & Kriti Krishna co-hosted a session for our #FemaleFounder community on fundraising challenges & trends in the current market. Headlines 👇 📉 The state of the venture market today is largely determined by interest rates, the exit environment, and election uncertainty; all three have contributed to the market being down compared to 2021/2022 but rebounding from the low of 2023. 🌱 Investors are showing a strong preference for Series B and Series A rounds (up 38% and 18% YTD respectively) with a flat-to-slightly-up Seed market. 📊 Seed stage valuations and Series A valuations remain robust. Series B valuations are down YTD.** 🤖 #AI continues to dominate the B2B sector, with sustainability as the second-most well funded sector. 💰This year’s US exit value is expected to reach $98B (down 86% from 2021 highs). The secondary markets are seeing increased activity due to investors’ liquidity crunch, and the M&A and IPO markets are expected to improve compared to 2023. We’ve got a LOT more data & analysis where this comes from (special thanks to Ivy Wong, PitchBook & Carta!) As a mission-driven Lab, we’re uniquely positioned to take a longer term view in helping founders build sustainable and profitable businesses. Beyond capital, we provide access to diverse hands-on support including: pitch deck practice & feedback, data room set up, building & facilitating target investor intros, valuation/ownership scenario modeling, and funding advice (e.g. venture debt vs. bridge raise). Learn more about our team & services: https://www.hearstlab.com/ **This information is based on the latest data available from Pitchbook for rounds raised in Q3. The data will likely change as more rounds are reported.

Last Friday, 9/27 for NYC Climate Week by Climate Group we hosted a jam-packed session specifically on Scope 3 solutions featuring HearstLab sustainability superstars Julia Collins & Lizzy Kolar 🌎 🌱✨ First up: Greenhouse Gas 101. Bottom line? “Scope 3 emissions is where the chaos happens, because this is all the emissions throughout your value chain.” So…what to do about it? Lexie Sachs (Good Housekeeping) dug in with Julia and Anna Turrell (Decathlon ) on the exciting opportunities and major complexities of how retail & CPG companies are moving the needle with their climate goals. Top takeaways: ⛓️💥 Everyone (companies, suppliers, consumers) needs data to make decisions…but, it must be reasonable, trackable, and consistent in order to realistically make systemic improvements. Enter: Planet FWD. ❗While food & bev is slightly ahead of the game due to consumer demand (people care about the ingredients they’re putting in their body!), it doesn't matter where/what industry you’re in…regulation is coming. 💰 Data must be coupled with education, up-skilling, and incentives (including how jobs are positioned and measured…think “Chief Value Officer” vs. “Chief Financial Officer”) ♻️ There is a huge interconnectivity of issues. Win-wins can take us further (e.g. eliminating deforestation also reduces emissions footprint). 📉 Ultimately: “The name of the game now is emissions reduction. This is why the work of engaging the supply chain is so important.” Next we heard from 3 next-gen employee benefit models working to enable sustainable decision making at enterprise scale. 1️⃣ Scope Zero is reimagining HSAs with a lens of financial & emissions reductions incentives. More: https://scope-zero.com/ 2️⃣ Carbon Collective (Breene Murphy) is leveraging existing 401K frameworks to empower individuals to make ESG-based investment decisions: https://lnkd.in/gHJ_HdVb 3️⃣ Terra.do (Anshuman Bapna) is building community & culture through climate education. More: https://www.terra.do/ Yes, yes, and yes! We could not be more inspired by these passionate founders, their visions, and our engaged audience. Special thank you to Hearst's VP of Real Estate & Facility Planning Lou Nowikas for hosting a “behind the scenes” tour of the Hearst Tower, one of NYC’s most iconic & sustainable high rises. McKinsey & Company's 10th anniversary #WomenInTheWorkplace report found that despite gains over the last 10 years, it will take nearly 50 years to achieve gender parity 🫠 At HearstLab we believe creating equity in venture capital is not a distant dream but a shared responsibility. There is much we can do to support women in the workplace right now — particularly in #VC. Here are a few things we can do TODAY: ✅ Networking — Make introductions or create networking opportunities for aspiring female executives, entrepreneurs and investors. ✅ Hiring and recruitment — Share open roles to help diversify hiring pipelines while supporting female-led companies as they recruit, hire, and scale. (Don’t miss our September “open role round up” https://lnkd.in/dhNkd2Ad) ✅ Spread the word — Amplify female brands and founder stories. (Shout out to the OG PR machine Gesche Haas/Dreamers & Doers®, The Female Quotient, and, of course, our iconic brands at Hearst Magazines) ✅ Access to capital — women-led startups receive less than 2% of venture capital despite having some of the highest returns. We’re proud to support other mission-aligned funds including: The Artemis Fund Amplifyher Ventures BBG Ventures Chloe Capital Female Founders Fund Golden Seeds Graham & Walker Halogen Ventures Harlem Capital Rethink Impact, LP Serena Ventures Ulu Ventures Women's Fund (An Alumni Ventures Fund) …just to name a few! Did we miss anything or anyone? Let us know 👇 For more on the state of women in the workplace, get the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eRyC5nT
