🐏 Who is a soil steward? At its core, a “steward” is a person supervising or guarding something. The key objective of the #HuMUS Soil Steward #training course is to provide knowledge and tools to civil servants and anyone contributing to #soilhealth—at regional and/or municipal levels—and enable them to become a Soil #Steward. A person that carefully, responsibly, and voluntarily contributes to spreading their knowledge and experience regarding #soil health. Simultaneously, they serve as an #advocate for raising awareness about soil health and care within the #local or #regional #community. 🏡 🔎 Does this sound like you? Start your stewardship journey with HuMUS and implement the EU #MissionSoil in your own neighborhood! 📜 All participants finishing the Course will receive a personalised Certificate accrediting them as HuMUS Soil Stewards. About us
The EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ (Soil Mission) aims to lead the transition to healthy soils via sustainable soil management. Engaging and activating municipalities and regions across Europe to protect and restore soil health is vital for a successful Soil Mission deployment. Within this context, HuMUS main aim is to facilitate the deployment of the Soil Mission across regions and municipalities, through: (i) the creation and experimentation of spaces for social dialogue on soil health among public and private actors in Europe; (ii) the promotion of a shared understanding and co-assessment exercises of soil challenges (biophysical and socio-economic dimensions); and, (iii) the enhancement of knowledge sharing among municipalities and regions, including on the needed transformations in current S4 (Sustainable Smart Specialisation) strategies and the use of available EU funds to support the transition.

We were at TERRAenVISION last week with Anci Toscana, presenting the latest developments of #HuMUS! Here are the most important bits to catch you up: 🏞 #Soilhealth is a territorial issue! Municipalities and #regions are at the forefront of #soil management, regulation, innovation, and community-building and are pivotal to deploying #MissionSoil. 💸 However, #local and #regional actors in #Europe still lack dedicated financial resources to soil management and quality improvement (part of other priorities such as #agriculture, #agroecology, #forestry, or the remediation of contaminated industrial sites). 🌍 The high number of participants to our #OpenCall (74 proposals) documents the existence of an EU-wide movement of ideas and innovative projects tackling soil related issues, where the #public sector plays a leading role. 🤝 Thanks to our #participatory soil #governance pilots, trainings, and tools for societal awareness and capacity building, we can help make soil the focus of future local and regional policies. 💡 Want to learn more? A joint territorial #soilhealth event „Bodengesundheit im Fokus“ was held at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano on 16 May 2024 organised in German and Italian with presentations and workshops of UNIBZ's two Horizon Europe #MissionSoil projects: ECHO Horizon Europe Project and #HuMUS! 35 stakeholders—including students, #farmers, advisors, farmer associations, South Tyrolean fruit growers' cooperatives, a working group for #biodynamic #agriculture, #researchers, policymakers, etc.—participated in the activities organized by the Competence Centre for Plant Health and its director Prof. Tanja Mimmo. Participants were most curious about differences between #organic and conventional #agriculture, the effect of #covercrops, #soilhealth indicators, and comparison between different sites. The event presented #livinglabs and the pilot case study South Tyrol of HuMUS and included stakeholder mapping and the signature of the Mission #SoilManifesto by the European Commission.
