  • 🗞️Big news! Governor Josh Green has announced that the first four tenants have moved into newly completed units in the La‘ikū temporary housing project along Lahainaluna Road on Maui. Construction of this housing reflects a partnership that includes the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, the Hawai'i Department of Education, as well as the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) and the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, with the support of a grant from the Maui Strong Fund. Micah Kāne, HCF CEO and president, says, "Providing safe and secure housing for Maui’s fire survivors is one of the key funding priorities for the Maui Strong Fund." If you were displaced by the wildfires and are in need of housing, applications for Laʻikū may be submitted online via helpingmaui.org or by visiting the CNHA Kākoʻo Maui Resource Center at Maui Mall during regular business hours. Learn more about the Maui Strong Fund and how it supports the people and places affected by the August 2023 Maui Wildfires on our website at https://lnkd.in/gAcNAcE9 Pictured: Ah Puck ʻohana and members of the CNHA team. The Ah Pucks were fourth-generation owners of Nagasako General Store and one of the oldest tenants at The Old Lahaina Center. Their business started as a plantation store in the 1920s called the “Nagasako Wiki Mart.” The General Store is now gone due to the wildfires. #MauiStrong #MauiHousing #AffordableHousing #MauiRecovery #MauiResilience #MauiCommunity

  • On May 2, 2024, we followed Matthias Nyquist, a Maui fire survivor, and the workforce crew from Hawai'i Land Trust for a day of restoration work at Nu‘u Refuge in southeast Maui. When asked about what he likes about the job, Matthias said, “I like this job because I feel like it can make a difference. The change you’re making is tangible. You can see it.” Hawai‘i Land Trust is a Maui Strong Fund grantee. With so many people looking for work to help them rebuild their lives and hang on to the land they own, Hawaiʻi Land Trust, with the support of a $1.1 million grant from the Maui Strong Fund and in partnership with nonprofit Kupu, has created a program to create temporary workforce opportunities for 48 Maui residents who have been affected by the recent wildfires.
