Portland, the countdown is on! The new airport terminal opens August 14th, and our Harder team, rocking those light blue hard hats, made it happen. A story from the Harder history vault: On Sunday, May 18, 1980, Mt. Saint Helens became the scene of one of the deadliest and most economically costly volcanic eruptions in American history. The avalanche of debris affected Spirit Lake’s natural outlet and formed dams which raised the level of the lake by 210 feet. If this debris blockage were dislodged, an estimated 2.6 billion cubic yards of sediment would flow into the Toutle, Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers, causing massive damage and loss of life. Harder won the US Army Corps of Engineers public bid in 1982 to pump the water out of Spirit Lake. Our team had 45 days to come up with a plan to get the necessary equipment and people out to the site and start pumping. The rising lake was kept under control by Harder’s employees and pumps removing millions of gallons of water until a permanent solution was designed and implemented by the US Army Corps of Engineers by the mid-1980s. Employees would hear, see and feel regular eruptions from the volcano throughout the project. The project was a testament to Harder and its employees' ability to complete difficult, dangerous, and time critical construction work. 🌋
