Harborview is the only level I adult and pediatric trauma and burn center for Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.
About us
In 1877, Harborview was founded as the six-bed King County Hospital in South Seattle. In 1931, it moved to its present location overlooking Puget Sound and its name was changed to Harborview Hospital, now known as Harborview Medical Center. UW Medicine’s management of Harborview has enabled the hospital to become a leading academic medical center, and new facilities have been added with support from voter-approved bond projects and Harborview reserve funds. The Norm Maleng Building opened in 2008 and the Ninth & Jefferson Building opened in 2009.

“When we came to 5E, Carl was our nurse and we really liked him a lot. He was super nice, attentive and encouraging. He encouraged my partner to move and to sit up in the chair. He encouraged him go the bathroom and push himself. And it helped! Carl also made sure that my partner was clean and generally provided us with a lot of positivity. He was incredible and deserves many accolades. We went through many departments at Harborview and our experience was great but we particularly loved Carl!" - Family member of 5E pt 📸: Carl Delica, RN

“I was incredibly impressed by every staff member, they were amazing. It is clear Harborview is not only an ER but a landing place for so many in crisis. I had no idea how much your staff was dealing with there as the epicenter for so much in the community. Everyone was treated with dignity regardless of the challenges they were facing. It was a beautiful thing to see. I have enormous respect for everyone at this ER. In particular, I noticed Malissa at intake. There were people in mental health crises and she just went with the flow. It was inspiring to see how much love she shared with the people in the waiting room. This looked like a position where others would get burned out but not her! Harborview is incredible." - ED patient 📸: Malissa Walker, Patient Services Specialist
