Last week, we hosted a virtual advocacy day with policy and research experts from Guttmacher, Ibis Reproductive Health and ANSIRH. These experts met with US Congressional staff to share their expertise and latest work to advance reproductive health and rights. Throughout the day, 40 experts held about 50 meetings with Congressional staffers. These dynamic conversations emphasized the importance of using evidence to shape strong reproductive health policy. Experts discussed the SRHR needs of people globally, the harm of the Dobbs decision and medically unnecessary restrictions, the importance of investing in international family planning and how research can help to expand access to abortion and contraceptive care. It's vital that US policymakers rely on the substantial body of reproductive health research when speaking publicly and developing policy agendas. We hope this advocacy day begins ongoing conversations about the role of evidence-based research in creating informed and equitable policies! #ReproductiveHealth #Contraception #AbortionAccess

❓Did you know that 8.5 million people worldwide have access to modern contraception methods thanks to the Dutch government's investment in development cooperation?   This is evident from a new report by the Guttmacher Institute detailing the impact of planned cuts by the Dutch government of the official development assistance (ODA) budget.   To learn more about the report, join us online this afternoon at the launch of the Multiparty Initiative on Global Health & sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Elizabeth Sully, from the Guttmacher Institute, will be discussing the report’s critical findings. Check out the livestream 🎥  ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ek_diENi   #NLforHealth #DutchGlobalHealthAlliance #GlobalHealth #SRHR

Immigrants in the US are more likely to encounter knowledge and financial barriers to abortion access than US-born patients, according to findings from Guttmacher researcher Alice Cartwright and colleagues. Collected prior to the Dobbs decision, these data highlight the ongoing challenges that immigrants face when seeking care, especially with abortion banned in 13 states and severely restricted in several others. Everyone, no matter where they are from, deserves access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care—including abortion care and coverage. Our new fact sheet outlines seven key ways #Project2025 threatens sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Authored by the Heritage Foundation, this far-reaching agenda aims to reverse civil and human rights and implement extremist conservative policies across federal agencies. It would also specifically target access to abortion and contraception, and seek to undermine reproductive health globally. Learn more about these threats to SRHR and how they would affect reproductive autonomy for people worldwide: https://gu.tt/4drtWOq #SRHR #ReproductiveHealth #ReproductiveRights

Big news: Georgia’s 6-week abortion ban was blocked following a court ruling that it violates the state constitution. Abortion in the Georgia is now allowed up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. This decision is likely to be appealed, but for now it’s crucial to ensuring that more Georgia residents can get the abortion care they need and deserve. As our VP for Public Policy Kelly Baden noted, “This is a hugely important win for Georgia and all credit is due to the Black women and their litigating partners who challenged this ban. The ban has had a devastating impact, including leading to the deaths of Candi Miller and Amber Nicole Thurman.” In other abortion policy news, last week North Dakota's total ban was repealed following a court ruling that the state constitution protects the right to abortion. This leaves 13 states enforcing total bans and many additional states are enforcing arbitrary gestational bans throughout pregnancy. Today marks a grim milestone: It’s been 48 years since the Hyde Amendment was first enacted. This US policy withholds insurance coverage of abortion from people enrolled in Medicaid and other federal programs in 32 states and DC. Most of these states also have total abortion bans or bans based on gestational duration. Hyde increases barriers to care, even for people in states where abortion remains legal. The harm of Hyde falls hardest on communities that have been systematically excluded from economic opportunity, including women living with low incomes and people of color. To end this racist and coercive policy once and for all, Congress must pass the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act to guarantee coverage for abortion—no matter how much someone earns, how they're insured or where they live. This would be a critical step toward ensuring that all people can make decisions about our lives and futures with dignity. 💪 Learn more: https://gu.tt/3XTwksI #HydeAmendment #EndHyde #4EACHofUs

Abortion bans push essential health care further out of reach. Case in point: After a 6-week ban went into effect in Florida on May 1, 2024, there was a substantial decline in clinician-provided abortions in the state. There was a monthly average of 8,050 abortions in Florida during the first 3 months of 2024. After the 6-week ban went into effect, abortions declined by 30% in May and 35% in June, compared with the Jan-March 2024 average. This devastating ban not only threatens access for state residents, but for abortion seekers throughout the South. Everyone deserves abortion access in their communities.
