Thank you to Andy Helm and Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP) at Georgia Tech for guiding our leaders at PHX Holdings GTC Machining and Phoenix Stamping Group, LLC through DDI Leadership Training. The content was powerful and the time together was invaluable. Herbert Spencer said “The great aim of education is not knowledge, but action” and we look forward to leveraging this training into meaningful action to improve our maker communities.
Navigating Conflicting Priorities: A Manufacturing Leadership Story How does a leader decide when the priorities of the company and the priorities of their team members are not in alignment? It can feel like there’s no choice but to discourage your team or miss a deadline. This is the scenario a leader at PHX found themselves in recently. When a team member tragically and suddenly lost their spouse, their entire production group wanted to support them and attend the funeral service over the weekend. Then Murphy’s law struck, and a critical customer order needed to be built and delivered in a rush, requiring most of the production team to work over the weekend. In this case, the leader leaned on the company motto of “Customers First, Employees Always” to help identify a solution. Through open communication and by soliciting the opinion of the team, together they decided that working extra shifts during the week would enable them to meet both the customer demands and to support their friend in their grief and moment of need.
