GSF The Upcycling Leap!

About us

GSF The Upcycling Leap! GSF emerged from a revolutionary idea, upcycling mixed plastic waste leveraging on a proprietary in-house production of graphene-based nanomaterials, effectively manufacturing feedstock to produce prime-quality polymers. A breakthrough in Molecular Recycling technologies. Our innovation is a disruptive technology solving a growing and complex industry and environmental problem. GSF aims at providing waste managers, plastic converters, and recyclers a solution for waste plastic and petrochemical industries with building blocks for food-grade polymers or lab-grade resins. The end products are completely derived from plastic waste. This technology provides a sustainable solution for waste management and energy diversification achieving a true circular economy.

A great data-driven analysis prepared by The Recycling Partnership, for U.S. residential recycling system, combining EPR strategies, design for recycling, focused investment opportunities, policy changes, and addressing the fact that households have a key role to play in advancing recycling rates.  According to the report, “76% of residential recyclables are lost at household level…”. Reduce and Reuse are the priority, then Recycling.  Regarding plastics, advanced or molecular recycling technologies can tackle the increasing rates of collected material and can handle “non-recyclable” plastics, playing a relevant role as a complement (and sometimes competition), to mechanical recycling. It will be interesting to include advanced recycling technologies, benefits and scalability and what needs to be done on the regulation to really move the needle.   We believe that experience supports the development of a scientific performance-based approach to plastics recycling partnerships, and public policy.   New developments address both the criticisms and unlock the ability of new technologies to upcycle the vast quantities of used plastics that are currently not recycled (...not even collected).      Policy makers should also focus on creating performance standards for avoiding harm to public health and to the environment, and allow innovators and communities the flexibility to develop increasingly effective ways of meeting those standards.  The approach taken by the Technical and Economic Assessment Panel under the Montreal Protocol and corresponding U.S. Clean Air Act provides the best example of how to successfully do this both in process and substance.   On “recyclable materials” the report continues to show that “…With over 9,000 community recycling programs throughout the U.S., each program has different standards for what materials can be collected.”… Upcycling/Advanced recycling technologies accept a wide variety of plastics, can occur at a profit thus creating an economic incentive for local communities to construct affordable upcycling facilities to collect and convert ALL of their plastics into valuable feedstock, at a net savings to their budgets rather than at a cost. #advancedrecycling #innovation

Meet Olivia Poole and myself in Brussels next week to talk about recycling - the opportunities and challenges and how we see the market develop in the months and years ahead. Be there on Wednesday, 11th September to hear Olivia Poole's keynote on Advancements in Mechanical & Chemical Recycling in Europe at 10.10am, immediately after the European Commission's Julia Roettgerding has presented on 'Calculation of recycled plastic content under the single-use plastics Directive'. Over the two days of the show, the Recycling Theatre will also feature presentations by Ole Jan Myhre (Norner AS), Henrik Bernquist (Nexam Chemical Holding), Dimitris Vgenopoulos (Cargill), Giorgio Santella (CMG Granulators), Adlan Omer (aixprocess GmbH), Duan Hao (Fineblend), Thies Julius Lorenzen (Nestlé), Joonas Mikkonen (VTT), Florian Mitterecker (Starlinger & Co ), Niklas Möhlmann (Gneuss), Paulo Gomes (PLASMAQ), Vanessa Gutiérrez Aragonés (AIMPLAS · Technological Institute of Plastics), David Hüttig (Herbold Meckesheim), Dietmar Dieing (Sesotec), and Estelle DALOD (PhD) (Axel'One). In addition, on both days David Eldridge and myself will chair panel discussions covering legislation, the changing role of plastic packaging in Europe, and sustainable supply-chains and and long-term strategies for plastic recycling. The The Recycling Partnerships PET Recycling Coalition has recently published their first annual report reporting on the progress in increasing collection and #recycling of #PET. With grant funding from the PET Recycling Coalition, we partnered with The Recycling Partnership and Caglia Environmental to implement two EverestLabs #AI and #robotics systems at the Cedar Avenue Recycling & Transfer Station earlier this year. The RecycleOS systems are designed to identify and sort PET plastic into three specialized categories: PET bottles, thermoforms, and pigmented or opaque PET. By separating these streams, Caglia is improving both the purity and value of recycled materials. To learn more, check out our blog: https://lnkd.in/gwHvRF7m And to learn more about the amazing work done by the PET Recycling Coalition, check out this Resource Recycling, Inc. article.

The article suggest “the world’s first plastics treaty, expected to be finalized this fall in Korea and codified in January 2025”… This treaty should focus on performance-based technologies.   As mentioned in other posts and forums, a scientific performance-based approach to plastics recycling partnerships and public policy is needed and possible.   Technologies like GSF Upcycling unlock the ability to upcycle plastics that are currently not recycled.   For example, legacy methods of pyrolysis have been appropriately criticized as insufficient to address plastic waste, both economically and environmentally.  Our technology enables any pyrolysis process by taking full advantage of all the carbon molecules in the mix.   When policy makers focus on performance standards it allows disruptive companies to produce and roll-out technologies that meet those standards.    This is a technical approach and should be applicable to different regulations throughout the world. The Technical and Economic Assessment Panel under the Montreal Protocol and corresponding U.S. Clean Air Act provide a great example. https://lnkd.in/daJT5MMP

“Waste management is one of many development issues that countries need to systematically address as their economies evolve to create better lives for their citizens.”  Nicholas Kolesch, our Vice President of Projects recently shared insights on Southeast Asia’s diverse plastic waste challenges. These are some key lessons gleaned from observing projects on the ground: ➡️ Collection is a crucial first step in tackling plastic waste in the environment at scale.  ➡️ Recognise and respect each country's unique circumstances and stage of development.  ➡️ By sharing knowledge and solutions, and enabling investment and funding, we can better support countries at different stages of their waste management journey.   Read the full article for more. #EndPlasticWaste #CircularEconomy #Recycling

My recent travels in Southeast Asia have taken me to several of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste projects, meetings with prospective new partners, and speaking engagements at the ICIS Recycled Plastics Conference in Bangkok and the ISWA International Solid Waste Association Beacon Conference in Penang. Meeting the people implementing solutions to the challenge of plastic waste in the environment gives me hope, but at the same time the message is clear that each country faces different challenges and needs to be able to chart its own course based on local circumstances. With the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution coming soon in Ottawa, I wanted to share some of my thoughts and experiences. Plastic waste is part of a wider waste management challenge, which in itself is a fundamental development issue. Let’s respect where countries are on that journey, support them by sharing knowledge and solutions, and enable investment and funding to #endplasticwaste.
