GrowNYC, a 501(c)3, serves 3 million New Yorkers each year, providing opportunities to make NYC truly livable.

About us

GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food and neighborhood green spaces, reduce waste, and care for the environment. GrowNYC was originally created in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC). Born out of the spirit of the first Earth Day, CENYC was initially a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues like air quality, traffic, and noise. Today, we serve over 3 million New Yorkers annually through a robust network of sustainability programs and resources. Our programs focus our efforts on four key areas: Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education. Since 1970, GrowNYC has been rolling up its sleeves alongside NYC residents to: - Provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers -Grow and maintain vibrant green spaces and community gardens. -Help New Yorkers recycle more and reduce waste. -Create the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on education programs.

Last year, I didn’t know where to begin for Climate Week NYC. This year, I promised myself I wouldn’t miss out! What did I get up to? I was lucky to be involved in the event planning for Rainforest Alliance’s suite of events and be invited to a handful of others. Here were my top 5: 🌱 A Garden Party hosted by GrowNYC! Farm tours, fresh food, and great music. A sunny afternoon spent on Governor’s Island is always an afternoon well spent. Thank you for the invite Anne O. Craig! ♻️ “Discover How NYC’s Top Brands Address Sustainability Within Their Supply Chain” hosted by OnePointFive (opf.degree). A fabulous panel featuring women sustainability leaders in the beauty and household product industries. Great to catch up with Denise Devlyn, Kathryn Mock, John Carroll, and Christy Ha! ☕️ “Brewing Solutions: Coffee and Climate Resilience” hosted by my very own team at the Rainforest Alliance. Our expert panel showcased the breadth of climate work happening across the coffee supply chain from farmer to company. It was great to enjoy a cup of delicious coffee from Joe Coffee Company with our alliance! 🌊 “Dive into our Oceans” hosted by Futerra in collaboration with filmmaker, James Honeyborne. An exclusive premiere of the Netflix docuseries, “Our Oceans.” Added to my must-watch list!! 🏔️ “Beer Saves the World” hosted by Patagonia at their SoHo store. An evening dedicated to learning about Kernza, a perennial wheat alternative, and good beer! Cheers!

When I left Napa Valley for New York City, I never imagined I would happen upon such a vibrant local food shed. Earlier this week I participated in an “insider’s tour” of the Union Square Greenmarket with the team at GrowNYC. What I learned about GrowNYC: 🍏 Everything in their greenmarkets is locally grown and produced - or fished! within 200mi of Poughkeepsie 📦 They’re opening a distribution hub in The Bronx to help small and mid-sized farmers bring us more delicious food! 🚌 Their programs teach the young and old about nutrition and provide access to affordable healthy food 🎓 They support hundreds of farmers with formal business training, on topics like certifications, profitability and the ever-important succession planning 🌱 Hundreds of community gardens have been built across all boroughs 🥀 They proved to the city that we can and want to compost food scraps! And so much more… Let’s celebrate this invaluable institution as it nears 50 years of serving all New Yorkers! (Partnerships, volunteers, sponsorships and donations always welcome.) Big thanks to our gracious hosts from GrowNYC, Anne O. Craig and Susie Sposek, and to Tanya Khotin for setting this up for the members of Women Investing for a Sustainable Economy (WISE)!
