On this World Environment Day, we celebrate the community, the land, and the team that brought our Goleta Energy Storage project to life by premiering this mini-documentary on the project. Working in partnership with local officials to produce tax revenues from an unused urban parcel - while bringing reliable clean energy to a region - are emblematic of our mission to decarbonize America's electric grid and create a better world through battery energy storage. #WorldEnvironmentDay #CleanEnergy #Decarbonization #GenerationRestoration #BatteryEnergyStorage City of Goleta #Goleta

Big batteries like ours are keeping power grids reliable and air conditioning flowing this summer as states like California battle record-setting, weeks-long heat waves, notes Ari Plachta in The Sacramento Bee. Sustained periods of triple digit temperatures have necessitated mandatory blackouts and flex alerts in recent years, but the addition of 10,000 MW of battery power since 2022 - enough to power 10 million homes for a few hours - gave grid operators the resources they needed this summer to deploy more energy to homes using extra power to stay cool. California relies on more grid-connected batteries to meet peak demand than anywhere else in the world. Follow the link in the comments to learn more about how BESS facilities are helping communities live more comfortably and safely in extreme heat. #HeatWave #BESS #BatteryStorage #EnergyReliability #ExtremeHeat

The women at GridStor are often trailblazers in their fields, where much of the applicant pool remains predominately male. We’re delighted to introduce you to the women paving the way forward in energy storage. Meet Nicole Denise Carrigan, J.D. Senior Manager, Procurement & Contracts. A daughter of law enforcement professionals, Nicole took a summer internship at the Calipatria State Prison that became foundational for her interest in compliance records management and law. In that role and beyond, Nicole was mentored by many pioneer women and men of color from entrepreneurs to ministry and department leaders, and deputy and commissioned wardens. Observing how they performed their duties and the culture of excellence they brought to the workplace and the community made an impression. Nicole earned two paralegal degrees in criminal justice and law office management with honors, and her Juris Doctor and LLM from Purdue University-Concord Law School then went on to serve as her city’s first African American councilwoman. When she accepted a position at a geothermal plant, her passion for energy grew as she realized her legal skill set had measurable benefits for operations. She was soon promoted from the IPP to Nevada’s utility managing conventional and renewable energy projects and IT procurement. “I originally wanted to save the world by practicing civil rights law; but I landed in renewable energy procurement and my entire focused changed. I began to see procurement as an opportunity to improve the enterprise purchasing process AND to close the gaps for historically disadvantaged businesses. That level of impact cannot be achieved through litigation alone; commercial opportunities must be created. At GridStor we are taking procurement innovation to the next level and strategically target diverse spending opportunities in the communities in which our projects operate. This is my life work, and I am honored to be a member of GridStor.” To those looking for career advice, Nicole shares: “Willingness to place myself in unfamiliar environments put me here. At GridStor we live by our operating principles – we do hard things and show up for each other. We have so much diversity in our personalities and skillsets, yet we are able to weave them together into a synergy I haven’t seen in a company before. Our different backgrounds allow us to visualize and execute solutions in what appears to be impossible, and we get it done. So don’t overlook your current skillset. Have confidence and seek out opportunities that you believe are a good match for you, even if you don’t check all the boxes.” #BESS #WomenInBESS #Procurement #RenewableEnergy #Compliance #BatteryEnergyStorage #CivilRightsLaw #Purchasing #ContractLaw

GridStor’s team comes from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, each adding depth and perspective to our collective GridStory. The women at our company have unique stories to tell, and we’re excited to introduce you to them. Meet Kelly Brown, Executive Assistant and Office Manager, who celebrates her birthday today! Kelly has always cared about the environment, but a career in clean energy wasn’t on her early radar. A theatre and English major in college, she began her professional life in the nonprofit arts sector, working for theatre companies, in arts management and then higher education. After making a career change into the technology and cloud storage industry, she pivoted once again to battery energy storage when the role with GridStor became available. “One of my favorite things about my line of work is supporting interesting projects that have a big impact. I like that GridStor is a local company intentionally rooted in Portland, with national influence. Climate change worries me, and it’s easy to feel hopeless and powerless as an individual, but as a company we are pursuing cutting edge technology solutions to this crisis and addressing the challenge in a meaningful way. It’s exciting to be working alongside so many smart people who know how to make these efforts succeed.” Kelly credits her arts background for preparing her to thrive in a startup environment. “Coming from theatre, I can trace a lot of my professional skills back to the stage. As a performer, you have to work collaboratively with a team, and no one is precious about their own contributions because we all understand that the sum of what we can produce together is greater than the individual parts.” Her advice to others looking to make a career transition comes down to two core principles. First, be open to new opportunities and don’t let a current lack of knowledge or core experience dissuade you from trying. Second, commit to learning what you don’t know. “Even people who have been in an industry for a long time are still learning and sharing with one another. Regardless of your background, know that you always have something to contribute. Nonlinear paths can make you a strong asset to a team.” #CleanEnergy #WomenInEnergy #BatteryEnergyStorage #StartupLife #CareerChange #ClimateTech #EnergyTransition
