Summer is a great time to learn about your local forests! In July, Green Diamond partnered with Society of American Foresters, Georgia Forestry Commission, and other organizations to host the Billy Lancaster Forestry Youth Camp at Lake Jackson in Georgia. Over five days, more than 40 campers from across the state explored the wonders of forestry, wildlife, and ecology. This camp was founded in 1988 by Billy Lancaster, a long-time supporter of forestry education, and has offered hands-on learning in the woods for 36 years! This year, Green Diamond also presented the camp with a gift from the Impact Fund to support future campers and the next generation of forestry professionals in Georgia. Happy #WorkingWednesday! 🌲🐝 Meet Aidan Stephens, our Systems Forester (and beekeeper) in the Planning Department at our California Timberlands. Originally from Colorado, Aidan made his way to the North Coast to study forestry at Humboldt State University in 2008. He then pursued a master’s in forest science at the University of Freiburg in Germany while fighting fire in the summers for the U.S. Forest Service. In 2019, Aidan joined the Green Diamond team as an Inventory Forester I in the Forest Resource Inventory Systems Department. Since then, Aidan has earned his Registered Professional Forester license and now serves as Systems Forester, improving inventory data integrity and generating more accurate harvesting models and unit plans. When he’s not working in numbers and models, Aidan is tending to his many bee hives, which has been a passion of his for over 10 years. Although he enjoys collecting honey, Aidan’s favorite part of apiculture is simply “the muscle memory—making sure the hives stay healthy, active, and alive requires consistency, and it’s a nice way to take my mind off of work each day.” When asked to share advice for new beekeepers, he said, "it can be an emotional rollercoaster.
