About us
The Great Lakes Protection Fund's mission is to identify, demonstrate and promote regional action to enhance the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The governors of the Great Lakes states created the Fund in 1989 to help them protect and restore their shared natural resource. The Fund is the first private, permanent endowment created to benefit a specific ecosystem. The governors designed the Fund to catalyze the continuous development of new technologies, innovative methods, and practical regional actions to improve the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

We were thrilled to attend the 2024 RFSI Forum in Denver, CO! The regenerative agriculture movement continues to make great strides toward healthier, more vibrant ecosystems while supporting the vital work of farmers, ranchers, fishers, and their communities. It was inspiring to connect with so many leaders in the field and engage in insightful conversations about the future. We left the forum even more determined and energized to explore how we can help advance regenerative agriculture in our region and beyond. https://rfsi-forum.com/

In 2019, we invested in a team led by Hyfi to develop next-gen smart sensor networks that would enable stormwater, watershed, and emergency managers to respond better to changing weather patterns and extreme weather. Today, Hyfi is deploying these sensors in New Orleans, delivering real-time data to inform flood warnings, emergency response, and watershed management decisions. We're proud to have supported this innovation. https://lnkd.in/gp8v6Fxm

A leap forward in microplastic reduction! We're thrilled to announce new funding to Wayne State University and a large team of scientists and community partners to mobilize a Great Lakes-focused microplastic action network. This project will give communities new tools – including an innovative open-source “library” – that will enable them to identify microplastic sources and test different interventions.
