About us
Great Lakes Energy goes beyond the expected to empower our members' lives. Built and led by the communities we serve, we have a mind for innovation and a heart for service. We are a trusted partner, connecting our members to the resources they depend on. We strive to go beyond expectations to connect our members to a greater world. As the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the largest member-owned power company in Michigan, we have succeeded because we’re a well-run business that is committed to providing energy solutions to more than 126,000 member-consumers in 26 counties in western and northern Michigan, from Kalamazoo to the Mackinac Straits. Since 1937 our success has been built around the mutual trust we share with our member-consumers. That’s because our members are also the owners of our electric cooperative. Great Lakes Energy is governed by a Board of Directors that is elected by our member-owners. We were formed more than 80 years ago for the sole purpose of providing service and value to our member-owners. Today, we continue looking out for you, with eight office locations and more than 290 employees to serve the needs of our members. As a member-owned cooperative, Great Lakes Energy allocates and eventually returns profits to our members in the form of capital credit refunds. We have refunded capital credits every year since 2003, totaling over $87.5 million. We will continue to do so as financial conditions allow. Shaun Lamp, President & CEO, is spending quality time in Washington, D.C., this week with the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. "This week, I have the privilege of chaperoning the Youth Tour. Over 2,000 juniors and seniors from across the country have gathered in Washington, D.C., to learn more about our government, our nation’s capital, our country’s history, and electric cooperatives. These delegates are sponsored by co-ops from 44 states, including 17 delegates from Michigan. GLE sponsored four delegates this year. Our group of delegates is amazing—inquisitive and engaged in everything they are exposed to. We have done many things so far, including going to the top of the Washington Monument, visiting with Debbie Stabenow, lobbying with Congressman Jack Bergman's staff, hearing from NRECA president Jim Matheson, and touring the Capitol Building. Some of the kids have even been getting up at 5:15 a.m. to run with me in the morning! While it’s hard to show just how incredible these delegates are, here are a few pictures to give you a glimpse of what they are getting to experience."
