The educators and support staff that make up Great Hearts Arizona gathered for the annual event called The Summit. This large kickoff for the school year provides space for the staff to learn together, celebrate the enthusiasm for the year ahead, and remind every one of the purpose and vision they share at Great Hearts before the academies celebrate the return of their scholars over the next few weeks. #greathearts #2024summit #gather #educators #kickoff #schoolyear

Classical Education. Revolutionary Schools.
About us
Since its inception, Great Hearts has been on a mission to become a national leader in public charter schools. We work tirelessly to ensure our students receive an outstanding classical liberal arts education. Our program is anchored in exceptional teaching from the best in the profession and the support of committed families who make each school a thriving community. Today, we serve more than 25,000 students at 45 academies across Arizona, Louisiana, and Texas as well as through our online academies. From our humble beginnings as a single entity in rented space, we have become Arizona’s largest not-for-profit charter school network, the largest “brick and mortar” classical education provider in the country, and we are excited about working with new partners to extend this education to eager students nationwide. We gladly prepare our graduates for success in the best universities in the nation, but our main purpose is the formation of the soul, heart, and mind. We believe that the highest goal of education is to become good, intellectually and morally.

In recent news, several schools and district across Arizona have announced a ban on cell phone use during school hours in an effort to reduce distractions in the classroom. While this is making significant media attention, keeping students free from distractions such as texting and scrolling social media has been a staple for Great Hearts academies from the beginning, over two decades ago. #greathearts #distractionfree #learningenviroments #cellphones #screentime #focus #studentsuccess

Meet Ms Marisa Cook, beloved faculty member at Great Hearts Forest Heights Lower School since 2016, and follow her journey from Girls' Volleyball Coach to Dean of Teachers! An avid volleyball player, Marisa Cook first joined Great Hearts in a coaching role, and she was quickly drawn in by our student focus of “not only developing the mind, but the heart as well.” Mrs. Cook soon joined the faculty as an Apprentice Teacher before becoming a lead teacher and grade level lead. That leadership experience along with the Fellows Program were most formative for her, and she shared, “Getting a glimpse into the work of administration was helpful, but it was the Fellows Program that allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and coach teachers outside my grade level/subject area expertise. It also challenged and trained my ability to manage my time and tasks!” Now serving as Dean of Teachers, Ms Cook credits the mentorship of Headmasters Jason Doughty, Trinette Keffer, and Jennifer Ramirez for guiding and inspiring her to leadership roles. While it has been challenging for her not to interact directly with students in the classroom daily, Mrs. Cook finds joy in “making an impact on a larger scale, helping more than just my kids, but the students of all the teachers I work with.” She believes, “We never stop learning. We are surrounded by so many resources - Brightspace PD, Teach Like a Champion, and teacher observation, and we must be willing to openly accept coaching from our leaders and ask questions.” Mrs. Cook admits that she wasn’t selected for the role the first time she applied, humbly acknowledging, “I had some growing to do, and I am grateful for the time I had to do so!" Every year, new faculty members in each of our regions come together for two weeks of deep, immersive training in preparation for the upcoming school year. Great Hearts leaders kick off the training with inspiring addresses outlining the philosophical foundations of Great Hearts: our history, our commitment to the classical liberal arts, and our dedication to nurturing the hearts and minds of each scholar in the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness. New faculty are then immersed in presentations explaining our curriculum and unique approach to teaching across various disciplines and grade levels, as well as our role in carrying forth the classical tradition. Teachers are also oriented to the specific supports they will receive while teaching at Great Hearts: grade level and content area mentoring, instructional coaching, and curricular support through our comprehensive Teacher Resource Portal. Moving from the philosophical to the practical, the remainder of New Faculty Orientation is then spent in specific content-area training and preparation. From comprehensive training for elementary level leads and teaching assistants in Spalding Phonics and Singapore Mathematics, to pedagogical training for middle and high school teachers in each content area, teachers benefit from content-rich training, discussion, and feedback. Alongside this instruction, equal focus is given to classroom management, and a focus on the development of a unified classroom and academy culture that reflects "ordered joy". Throughout their time at New Faculty Orientation, teachers grow not only through content-rich presentations, but through faculty seminars on great works of literature, and the edifying associations and friendship with leaders and fellow teachers, which will continue throughout their time at Great Hearts Academies!
