Last Friday, Great Ecology transformed a parking spot into a vibrant green space for our Park(ing) Day event, and it was amazing to see our staff’s hard work come to life! We had a great turnout from the community, with visitors stopping by to learn about the importance of green spaces, native plants, and sustainable urban design. It was inspiring to see so many people engage with our displays and discuss ways to bring more nature into our urban environments. Launched in 2005, Park(ing) Day is an annual event where people worldwide transform street parking spaces into small parks and spaces for art, play, and learning.    This event serves as a creative example of open-source urban design, accessible to everyone. This year’s theme, Native Plants, aligns closely with the work we do at Great Ecology.   We’re excited to add our unique Southern California ecology perspective by partnering with Moosa Creek Nursery to create a beautiful, educational installation focused on the native plants of San Diego County. Our installation will feature species found in the county’s five major eco-zones: Woodlands, Grasslands, Coastal Sage Scrub, Riparian, and Coastal Strand (Dune).   Some of the plants on display will include Sand Verbena, Beach Daisy, Shaw’s Daisy, Coyote Brush, Desert Willow, Salt Marsh Fleabane, California Poppy, Yarrow, Western Redbud, and many more!   In addition to showcasing local plants and providing a relaxing space for visitors, we’ll offer informational materials, games, and more.   We invite you to visit our installation in front of 2540 San Diego Ave., San Diego, CA, on Friday, September 20th, from 9 am to 4 pm, and explore the role of native plants in your urban environment! #ParkingDay2024 #NativePlants #Parks #UrbanDesign #GreenSpaces #SanDiego

This past Friday, New York City broke ground on New Stapleton Waterfront, a significant coastal development in Staten Island that brings vital new housing and resilience to its shoreline. This 35-acre former U.S. naval base is being transformed into a new mixed-use community which will bring over 2,100 mixed-income residential units, ground floor retail, a 600-seat public school, additional community facilities, 12 acres of interconnected public open space and upgraded infrastructure to Staten Island’s North Shore. With the New York City Economic Development Corporation leading this for the City, Arup are thrilled to have supported them as their prime consultant along with SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC, Marpillero Pollak Architects, McLaren Engineering Group, Great Ecology and so many other talented firms. Congratulations to the Arup team who have been leading this, most notably Sherazad Mehta PE, ENV SP, James DeMarco, Monika Marciszewski, PE and alumnus Janine Witko. It is an honor to have started this company and led it for 23 years - and a crazy irony that our company was started on September 11th, 2001 as a downtown New York City firm - our first day in business was filled with heartache and tragedy as we lost friends in the horrible attack that day. Great Ecology emerged from that nightmare as a leader in the industry. And just 4 weeks before our 23rd anniversary we joined the True Environmental platform for our next exciting chapter. Over the almost two and a half decades in business hundreds of people have worked at our firm - many becoming leaders at GE and others moving on to exciting practices elsewhere. We celebrate together those who have been with us for days to years, those who were once at Great Ecology and work elsewhere now, and especially our partners, friends and clients who have given us the opportunity to complete almost 1,500 projects in dozens of states, several countries and influence the field of ecology and habitat restoration.
