  • "Little did I know then that I was developing a skill I would use to support Grants Works clients." ⬇ What is that skill? Check out the latest edition of the Federal Grant Insights newsletter where I delve into another exciting topic. It may not be really exciting but it is very important and even foundational if you're a federal grantee--even more so if you're a new federal grantee. https://lnkd.in/e7fU_Dpb

  • One of the things I enjoy about being a grant consultant is observing the unique grant management needs of our clients and developing tailored solutions. During last week's online event, I shared real (recent) cases of *federal grant fraud* that may have been avoided with the right controls, up-to-date policies and procedures, accountability, and oversight. We don't usually do this but we're sharing the recording right here on LinkedIn. Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/etHJBzTC Did I answer some of the questions you may have had about this topic? *************** Grants Works is a federal grant consulting firm based in Atlanta, GA. We provide post-award services to support our clients as they manage and comply with federal grants. Our staff has a combined 80 years of experience and have obtained and managed federal grants from the perspectives of a recipient, subrecipient, and passthrough entity. We are federal grant compliance specialists.

  • People sometimes have a perplexed look on their faces when I explain what I do. It usually goes something like… So, what kind of business do you own? I’m the CEO of a federal grant consulting firm. Oh, you help people get grants. Yes, that too, but most importantly, we help them *keep* their grants. We specialize in federal grant compliance, we find compliance gaps, we help them manage their federal grants, and we train their teams and other stakeholders. Then I explain that sometimes when organizations receive federal grants, they need the support of consultants with grant administration experience to help them avoid misuse, fraud, underspends, etc.                                        That’s when it becomes clear. It’s often during the engagement kickoff that it becomes especially clear to some of our clients how we support them. Here’s a note we received immediately after an engagement kickoff from one of our current clients—the PI on an NSF grant awarded to a science organization.... “We are grateful for your expertise and guidance as we work to meet the requirements set by NSF for our grant.“ If your organization is new to federal grants or it has federal grant experience but is new to being pass-through entities, I invite you to join me next Wednesday, July 31st for the first of six monthly LinkedIn Live events. Let’s talk about *keeping* your federal grant(s)!

  • It’s been just a few weeks since we launched a quiz to help people gauge how effective their federal grants management process is. I realize the results don’t tell the whole story, but I thought it was a fun way to help federal grantees assess how well their grants are being managed. One of the questions asks about oversight of the award budget. That’s always a fun one to ask. I’m often surprised at some of the responses I get when I ask that question at speaking events or during our training sessions. The answer that still surprises me is “no one.” Want to take the full quiz? Here’s the link to give it a go: https://lnkd.in/ewfyXgsf

  • One of my favorite things to do as a federal grant consultant is.... ⬇ Conduct site visits. Why? Because that's when I get to see some of the awesome and innovative work that is made possible with federal grants. Here I am after I just finalized our team's site visit plans for one of our clients. Why do we conduct site visits? Well, it's one of the ways that our clients who have subawardees monitor their subawardees. I'll be hosting a LinkedIn Live event next Wednesday, July 31st at 12:00pm ET where I'll talk about the responsibilities of pass-through entities. What's a pass-through entity you may ask? Join me next week to find out and learn more. Here's the link to the event: https://bit.ly/3Lx3xTM

  • Do any of them sound familiar to you? In the newest edition of my LinkedIn newsletter, Federal Grant Insights, I shed some light on five of the mistakes some new federal grantees make. #3 - Delayed Attempt to Find the Expertise Needed Assigning management of the federal grant to a program or project director because “it’s their project” may not be the right approach for several reasons. When I was the fiscal consultant during site monitoring visits of federal grantees, I quickly learned that this is often the approach taken and I also learned some of the pitfalls of that approach. I'm excited to announce that I will be hosting six webinars over the next six months. The first webinar is scheduled for July 11, 2024 and will cover subrecipient monitoring. The other five topics include the updated Uniform Guidance, grant management policies and procedures, and more. If your organization is a new federal grantee, you don't want to miss this series. • Your organization worked for weeks to plan, write, edit, edit some more, and submit a federal grant application. ⬇ The organization received a six-, seven-, or even eight-figure federal grant and everyone's overjoyed. But, have you considered.... **Who within your organization knows what's required to *keep* the grant? **If the decision to hand over management of a federal grant with all those post-award regulatory requirements over to an expert grant *writer* will protect the organization? **If applicable, what will happen if your team continues to kick the can down the road? **Is that plan to hire a team of associates from a consulting firm with limited federal grant *management* experience a good approach? What's the plan to *manage* the grant? If your organization needs support managing your federal grant, contact Grants Works Consulting at https://lnkd.in/ekFnW-Jv We specialize in federal grants. Also, be on the lookout for several workshops we will be announcing soon. Each workshop is developed to help first time and veteran federal grantees.
