About us
SolSmart provides no-cost technical assistance to help local governments adopt national best practices to expand solar energy use in their jurisdictions. The program recognizes and celebrates these communities with SolSmart designations of Gold, Silver, and Bronze. To date, nearly 500 local governments in 43 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico have achieved SolSmart designation. SolSmart is led by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), along with numerous other partner organizations with expertise in solar energy and local government. Funded by the DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office, this team helps local governments and regional organizations implement national best practices that reduce local barriers to solar energy development.

Going solar has earned Irvine a bronze! 🏆 The City of Irvine recently received a bronze designation from SolSmart. Irvine was recognized for its work to enhance public access to information about solar energy, including financial incentives, consumer protection, and local installers. Central to the City’s efforts is the Solarize Irvine program in partnership with OC Goes Solar. Since the program launched in 2022, 200 homeowners have switched to solar, 69 EV chargers have been installed through the program, and hundreds of residents have learned how to reduce energy bills and support Irvine’s carbon neutrality goals. Ready to go solar? Join us 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, July 22, at Northwood Community Center for a free Solarize Irvine Community Workshop.
