Making food healthy, affordable sustainable and fair
About us
The Los Angeles Food Policy Council is a collective impact initiative working to make food healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable. We bring together leaders and experts from across sectors, geographies, and socio-economic communities to strengthen connections throughout the food system, and to facilitate and coordinate systemic change. Through policy creation and cooperative relationships, our goals are to reduce hunger, improve public health, increase equity in our communities, create good jobs, stimulate local economic activity, and foster environmental stewardship. In particular, the LAFPC aims to connect environmental sustainability and local agriculture with efforts to expand access to healthy food in underserved communities.

"We understand that climate impacts on the region’s natural biodiversity may decrease access to traditional foods in native populations. We have seen in our region and beyond and certainly in the central valley that extreme climate events can put agricultural workers at risk and affect food access by impacting food related services, equipment and goods delivery.” -Ali Frazzini from the LA County Chief Sustainability Office. Thank you to everyone who joined our second LA Foodscapes event! Here is the full recap of our LA Foodscapes: Our Future Food Ecosystems and Climate. We're looking forward to convening everyone again in September to continue very critical conversations around food equity. Los Angeles Food Policy Council reposted this
"Alba Velasquez, [Executive Director of Los Angeles Food Policy Council] emphasizes that Los Angeles is a vibrant hub of innovation and opportunity. She points out that many effective solutions for local issues already exist; the key is to empower the right communities to participate in these solutions. Velasquez argues that there is no “one-size-fits-all” method. She stresses the importance for impact investors to provide support and resources to community residents who are actively driving these solutions. By doing so, they can help scale change and foster a more comprehensive and sustainable food system." Check out this thorough recap on a great discussion during last month's Mission Investors Exchange conference. Ideating on innovation and deeper impact with: Sam Polk, CFA, from Everytable Noramay Cadena, from Supply Chain Capital Prophet Walker, from Treehouse moderated by Clare Fox, from Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders (SAFSF) "Instead of addressing individual challenges separately, a systems-wide perspective is necessary to acknowledge the connections between food and critical factors such as social, racial, and gender equity, health outcomes, environmental degradation, and climate change."

Food is often a second thought in discussions about solutions to homelessness, economic development, and mental health. Yet, it is the crucial connection that should be at the forefront of all these conversations. A connected and just food system contributes to a high quality of life for everyone, from small business owners and local growers to community members. How can we promote a food system that moves beyond the negative outcomes of capitalism and fosters resilience and equity for all? Thank you, Mission Investors Exchange for giving us the space to share how this work is being approached in Los Angeles across our network of organizations and businesses doing this work.
