GWI exists to build and amplify the collective power of people to create regenerative, just, life-affirming communities.
About us
Founded in mid-2015, the Good Work Institute (GWI) is a worker self-directed nonprofit. We act as a catalyst for a sustained Just Transition movement, by cultivating, connecting, supporting, and illuminating the work of people who are fostering resilience and regeneration in their places. -- It is time for a profound shift. As we experience the effects of a global economic system that values profit and endless growth over the welfare of humans and the biosphere, we believe that people are more ready than ever to usher in something radically different. We are reconnecting to our hearts, to our communities, and to the earth, and committing to building a future that works for all. A new system must be built from the bottom up, person by person, place by place, working together for the common good. We believe that change is inevitable, but justice requires conscious work. We stand for wise choices as we navigate the future, and we see a thriving network of people, working collaboratively, as the path to a regenerative economy and a more just society. We know that real change doesn’t happen when we work alone: it springs from a resilient, energized, and hopeful community, with each member pursuing their Good Work in an interconnected, life-sustaining web. Our work is guided by these five Just Transition principles: - Advancing ecological restoration - Democratizing communities, wealth, and the workplace - Driving racial justice and social equity - Relocalizing most production and consumption - Retaining and restoring cultures and traditions Just Transition is a national framework for advancing systems change in our society that was articulated by the Oakland-based organization Movement Generation.

So exciting to see Engather pick up momentum with the fabulous Amanda Cassiday at the collaborative helm. Check out the platform and bring it into your community! We remember the good ole days at GWI's Rooted Resources Festival in 2022, almost exactly 2 years ago, when this idea sparked from a conversation between Amanda and Chris Woehrle who were both checking out festival sessions. Engather is putting into practice the ideas behind regenerative economy. 😍 #gifteconomy
I’m nurturing a movement that seeks to transform our economic system, build community, and improve our sense of belonging and wellbeing. By integrating Engather’s gift economy platform into your network, community, or town, you are creating an entirely new container for members to build trust, engage authentically, support one another, and make meaningful connections. In other words, you are building essential social capital that will help your community thrive.

Kai Lord-Farmer is well positioned to see the first emergent stages of experiments in affordable housing. With a background in urban planning, he has a keen interest in how we might address the rising cost of living in the region. In this radio show, hosted by Hélène Lesterlin, Kai goes through a variety of approaches that might challenge you to think about private property and housing challenges in new ways. Have a listen to the archive on Radio Kingston: https://lnkd.in/e3AzvZeH

“Leadership is accepting the responsibility to create conditions that enable others to achieve shared purpose in the face of uncertainty.” - Marshall Gantz This was one of several quotes that inspired us as we unpacked the vision of leadership for a Just Transition. GWI offered this 2-hour workshop on “Regenerative Leadership” this past Saturday to the members of the Master Community Builder Program through Cornell Cooperative Extension. We investigated what leadership usually looks like in a hierarchical system, and then created a lens through which to see a new approach, one that builds power equitably and shares decision-making with intention. We were so grateful to have been able to spend time with this group again, having brought our day-long Just Transition foundational workshop to them in January. The Master Community Builder Program is a 10-month program that trains volunteers in the frameworks to build resilient and regenerative communities. Thanks to Julika von Stackelberg for inviting us! #regenerativeleadership #justtransition #dogoodwork #facilitation

We send a big thank you to the Daily Freeman for shining a light on our work! #dogoodwork #communitybuilding #justtransition KINGSTON, N.Y. — Visitors and residents of Kingston have probably seen the brightly decorated building at 65 St. James St., paused to admire it, and moved on, wondering what could be happening there. Behind the washes of pink, blue, and green is the Good Work Instituteʼs “Greenhouse,” the home base for an organization determined to connect and uplift the local community through workshops, networking, and financial support.

We had a great conversation with Michael Slaby last week on the Good Work Hour! Check it out: https://lnkd.in/e_dnKE47 Michael Slaby is a big systems thinker. We start with how he stays grounded in this time of instability, both seasonal and global, with a simple daily ritual. From there we travel out into what we mean by “the commons,” how we actually thrive as a social species, and what the promise of the “digital commons” might be. Public space and civic engagement are required for democracies, but how do we navigate their intersection with digital space?

This week we are sharing two posts that each reflect on the power of language: what we choose to say and what we say unconsciously. Language encodes our deepest beliefs and societal values. "Language frames our relationship and perspective with the world around and within us. The structure of certain languages, such as many indigenous and Native languages, promotes connectivity, a sense of belonging, and recognizes an active state of emergence." - Dr. Kelly Jennings "In our exploration of conflict resilience at GWI, we talk about language – the power of it, and the practices that can help us be more intentional, caring, and effective, using non-violent communication. Violence is built into so many aspects of our society, and language is no exception." - Micah Visit our blog to read these two thought-provoking posts, and maybe you will come away with a new appreciation for what you say. https://lnkd.in/e8Ejc8a3

Have you come to your senses today? What is the most intriguing smell you have ever experienced? Can you identify this sound? What happens when you close your eyes, here, now? Micah and Helene had a great conversation this week on The Good Work Hour: click through to "Come to Your Senses" to listen now. We've had guests on the show recently talking about urban development with community, the commons, and transportation innovation (bikes! walking!). All our shows are archived on Radio Kingston so you can listen when you want. https://lnkd.in/eKV75vst

We celebrate this day with music, connection, and love. With open hearts, hands and heads, we are nurturing a community working towards a world based on authentic love of ourselves, one another, and our shared planet. We believe that means we need to show up for ourselves and one another differently. We need more empathy, more connection. If you're feeling it - please consider supporting our work. Gifts of any size matter! Follow the link on our website to our “Support” page. 💕 We love you! And to show it, here is a gift for you: a playlist created by our own Micah. Stay tuned because we're also putting together a shake-off-winter dance party! https://lnkd.in/ekhTqUnp
