Perhaps you’ve heard (or used) these kinds of terms in reference to others. Or, maybe, they’ve been used to describe you. Whether intentionally or not, the derogatory language that we use to define people based on their age is one manifestation of ageism. Ageism is prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age...and it’s common within our clubs. And it goes beyond language. Our policies, our walkways, our lighting, our menus, and more may be “othering” groups of people based on their generation.   Yet, the club industry is a special setting where generations comingle, both among members and staff. The opportunity to resist ageism is limitless! And now is the time. This year, 4 million people will be turning 65, and with millions of young adults joining the work force, education and training for this demographic trend is essential for your club.
