Dr. Eric Moghadamian at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY, was presented with a patient who had a very comminuted distal femur fracture. The fracture had a complex interarticular involvement that required careful reduction of the fracture to allow for fracture healing. The anatomic contour of the Lateral Distal Femur Plate from the ANTHEM™ Distal Femur Fracture System helped Dr. Moghadamian to maintain the desired reduction. Despite having medial condyle involvement, he was able to utilize a kickstand screw from the lateral side for added fixation medially. The patient is now several months postoperative, and the fracture has healed nicely. Dr. Krishna Vemulapalli recently addressed a challenging case involving a 35-year-old woman who sustained a severely comminuted distal femur fracture in a motor vehicle accident. For this very distal fracture, Dr. Vemulapalli chose the AUTOBAHN™ EVO Retrograde Nail and Locking Washer to achieve the desired fixation. Due to comminution on the lateral condyle, Dr. Vemulapalli utilized the Locking Washer for additional support. The Locking Washer provided additional distal fixation, while maintaining the benefits of using a nail. Faced with the difficulty of reducing the displaced segments in the distal third of the shaft, Dr. Vemulapalli employed the Globus Ball Spike Reduction Clamp, large pointed reduction forceps, and medium pointed reduction forceps. The Globus radiolucent instruments were key to maintaining reduction during C-arm use.
