After a long and fascinating day, Rui told me we had One More Meeting. And we were late. We hustled through the super cool nonprofit collaborative working space in Pudong, Shanghai in which we had spent the afternoon, through hallways with colorful charity logos, timelines of proud milestones, happy looking displays, and apologized our way into the small, but cozy office of Mana Data. They had a lovely incense going and immediately poured us special tea and offered treats. They launched into a data-filled presentation on an interactive smart board and I felt instantly energized and at home. Even though most of the language on the slides was in Mandarin, their bar charts and pie charts and graphs immediately felt familiar to me, as did their mission: helping women become more empowered to use data in their businesses, their lives and for their communities. This organization full of young women and students is pushing innovation and helping everyday folks connect to technology and AI for practical and appropriate purposes, including bringing communities closer together. Being with them reminded me of my early work in the tech for good space when once again, we were worried women would be left out of access to new tools and paradigms (at that time: email and ftp sites!) I know we're in good hands with these new women in tech leaders and as you can see, we had a great time trading stories and advice!

Connecting donors and community leaders around the world for lasting change

Today has been nothing short of amazing. Landing in China and being greeted by the familiar warmth of this incredible country has filled me with so much joy. Spending the day with our outstanding China office lead, Wang Rui, reminded me of why this work means so much. Rui’s dedication and the genuine care she has for the communities we serve are palpable, and it's moments like these that make me so proud to be part of GlobalGiving. GlobalGiving's roots in China run deep. We began our journey here in 2008, right after the devastating WenChuan Earthquake. Together with our corporate partners, we mobilized to support communities in need, disbursing 185 grants totaling $10.7 million to 65 nonprofit partners between 2008 and 2016. Since establishing our Shanghai Representative Office in 2018, we’ve disbursed 147 grants to 45 nonprofit partners across the country, totaling $21.1 million. I’m filled with gratitude for the partnerships we’ve built along the way, including with Ford Motor Company, Cummins Inc. 3M, and Riot Games among many others. These partnerships have enabled us to make a real, tangible difference in the lives of so many, and I am deeply thankful for their trust and collaboration. This is just day one, and already I’m reminded of how special this place is. I’m looking forward to sharing more about our journey and the impactful work happening here. Stay tuned—more updates to follow
