Last week, I attended the Second Aquatic Resources and Blue Economy Conference #ARBECII in Kisumu. I was lucky to interact with leading researchers whose work I have often referenced, especially on Lake Victoria ecology and pollution. It was a great week for making new connections and collaborating with people and organizations who share a common goal. I was honored to meet the #ACARE team, who have made significant advances in aquatic research and education. They introduced the #GPFD team to researchers from KMFRI, and the University of Windsor among other researchers. I want to thank Global Partners for Development for giving us the opportunity to attend this conference. Dr. Benjamin Nyilitya, my research supervisor, Dora Okeyo, our director of programs, and my fellow researcher Dina Kodhier made the most of the conference. The key takeaway message was that there is a lot of potential to be tapped from the blue economy, but for it to succeed, we must use sustainable measures to prevent pollution and take care of our aquatic ecosystems. The Homa Bay Blueprint project is in line with this and it aims to make a paradigm shift in sanitation by utilizing AirSCOW technology and local knowledge to reduce pollution from municipal sludge in Homa Bay town.
