The team at GLI was saddened to hear that Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has passed away after her battle with pancreatic cancer. Congresswoman Jackson Lee has been an inspiration to our community as a longtime public servant, a mother, a daughter, and a patient herself. She served as a fierce champion, both for her constituents and for all patients throughout the country. A contributor to our Advanced Advocacy Academy (A3) program, her commitment to improving patient care and equity shone through her work. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family in this challenging time.

Global Liver Institute (GLI) Vice president of the Liver Health Program, Jeff McIntyre, discussed in an interview for the Pharmacy Times how important patient advocacy is when addressing #NASH/#MASH. “Often diabetes is what is emphasized, and #fattyliver is kind of left alone until it’s advanced, until a more significant or more critical state,” McIntyre said in the interview. “Pharmacists are really important in terms of looking at what sort of range of medications a patient may be able to be on." McIntyre also stressed how many patients struggle to afford costly weight loss or cholesterol medications that could help alleviate its effects 💵 💊 and that advocacy for more supportive policies can ensure equitable treatment for all NASH patients. 📖 Read the full article below to learn more about risk factors for NASH, managing it in diverse populations, and its overall future and legislation to push for further research and study. 📖 https://lnkd.in/gJ2vjVkb #MASH #NASH #MASLD #NAFLD #MAFLD #FattyLiverDisease #HealthIsWealth #LiverHealth #LiverStrong #LiverHealthisPublicHealth #LiverHealthAwareness

Last month Global Liver Institute had the honor of joining Denmark in USA to host a panel of experts from a variety of backgrounds to tackle an imminent challenge together: the twin problems of #obesity and #liverdisease. The vibrant, intimate conversation in Ambassador Sørensen's residence brought a wealth of insight. What did they suggest might help? To start: 💸 Meaningful investment in community infrastructure that supports #metabolic health 🥼 Innovative research into mechanisms & implementation of both screening & treatment 📃 Thoughtful policies affecting upstream systems and health care delivery ❤️ Thorough, personal care for patients throughout disease progression Such complex problems truly require interdisciplinary, all-hands-on-deck solutions – but we have the tools to tackle these growing diseases! #MASH #NASH #MASLD #NAFLD #MAFLD #FattyLiverDisease #Denmark

The 5-year overall survival rate for patients with colorectal #liver metastases that can't be surgically removed is significantly better with a #livertransplant plus chemotherapy, showing a 79% survival rate, compared to just 9% with chemotherapy alone. These results come from the TRANSMET trial presented at the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. René Adam, MD, PhD, head of the Department of Hepato-Biliary Surgery, Cancer and Transplantation at Paul Brousse Hospital, in Villejuif, #France, and professor of surgery at the Faculty of Medicine at Paris South University explained that combining #livertransplantation with #chemotherapy offers a potential cure for patients with difficult-to-treat #livercancer. This approach can significantly improve long-term outcomes for those with liver-only colorectal liver metastases that can't be surgically removed. The results from recent studies support making liver transplantation a new standard treatment option for these patients, potentially changing current medical practices. Dr. Adam also said that liver surgery is the best chance for long-term survival in colorectal liver metastases patients, but only 20% can have surgery immediately. Others may benefit from chemotherapy before surgery. For those who can't have surgery, standard chemotherapy offers limited long-term survival. Previously, liver transplants weren't an option due to low success rates, but better patient selection and chemotherapy have improved outcomes. The TRANSMET trial was launched to prove the benefits of this approach. Patients needed specific criteria to enroll and were selected by a committee. The trial included patients from France, #Belgium, and #Italy. Transplanted patients had similar survival rates to those with traditional liver transplant needs. https://lnkd.in/gJr6--ji #transplanttuesday #transplantation #organtransplant #liverhealth #liverdisease #raredisease #donatelife

Liver #cirrhosis is a major cause of death in #Africa, with rates doubling in sub-Saharan Africa between 1980 and 2010 due to viral #hepatitis and alcohol-related #liverdiseases. Viral hepatitis poses a significant threat, affecting over 70 million Africans and leading to about 200,000 deaths annually. However, testing and treatment options are often inaccessible, highlighting a pressing health disparity in the region. ➡️ Three Things I Would Tell a Patient 📣 1. Your diagnosis does not define you. You are so much more than your illness. Remember your strengths, passions, and all the things that make you unique. 2. Don’t give up. The journey may be tough, but resilience and determination can lead to incredible outcomes. Keep pushing forward, one step at a time. 3. Find a fight song. Music has a powerful way of uplifting and motivating us. Choose a song that empowers you and let it be your anthem through the highs and lows.
