Advancing global action on responsible AI, with local evidence
About us
The Global Index on Responsible AI is a multidimensional tool, advancing global action on responsible AI with local evidence. With a far reaching network of partners and researchers, we’re unearthing critical, contextual data in 138 countries to measure the responsible development of AI worldwide. Employing a comprehensive and comparative set of human rights-based benchmarks, the Global Index on Responsible AI measures government commitments and country capacities, through a social, technical and political lens. This project is supported and funded by IDRC, the Government of Canada and USAID.

As AI systems process increasingly large amounts of personal data, protecting privacy and ensuring robust #dataprotection have become more critical than ever. 🔐 The Global Index On Responsible AI evaluates how countries design and implement frameworks that safeguard privacy and regulate the collection, processing, and storage of personal data in AI systems. In its first edition, Data Protection and Privacy ranked 3rd among 19 thematic areas evaluated-a high ranking that reflects decades of focus on privacy and recent updates to data protection frameworks to meet the demands of emerging technologies. But why is this so important? 🔐 The right to privacy: Individuals should have control over who has access to their personal data and how it is used. In AI, privacy protection ensures that sensitive data is not misused or mishandled, threatening fundamental human rights. ⚖️ Data protection: Laws and frameworks around data protection ensure that AI systems collect, process, and store personal data in legally compliant ways. In addition, effective security measures prevent privacy violations, and transparency ensures users are informed about how their data is being used. 🌍 Global efforts: The Global Index on Responsible AI has identified government frameworks and actions that prioritize data protection. Organizations like Paradigm Initiative and Privacy International are actively working to strengthen digital rights and ensure that AI tools respect privacy in both public and private sectors. By tracking how governments and non-state actors promote data protection, the GIRAI provides crucial insights into responsible AI practices and helps guide the way forward. 🌍 How does Africa measure up in AI Safety, Accuracy, and Reliability? The 2024 Global Index on Responsible AI reveals both progress and challenges. Kenya leads the way with a score of 44.4 out of 100, showing strong evidence across government and non-state actor involvement. But out of 41 African nations, 30 still show no evidence of frameworks or actions in this critical area. As AI systems become central to critical sectors like healthcare, finance, and public services, ensuring they are safe, accurate, and reliable is key to fostering trust and minimizing risks. Read the full article with a critical analysis on this thematic area, and explore key findings, scores, and insights on AI Safety, Accuracy, and Reliability in Africa. Thank you Dr. Nada Abedin, for capturing the essence of the Global Index On Responsible AI from Rachel Adams’ presentation. The findings truly highlight the critical gaps in AI governance, especially around human rights and gender equality. We are proud of this project and confident in the impact it will have on advancing #responsibleAI globally. #AIDevelopment #AIGovernance #HumanRights
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending an amazing lecture at Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education by Rachel Adams, where she unveiled the first-ever Global Index On Responsible AI (GIRAI). As someone deeply interested in the intersection of technology and society, the findings were both enlightening and concerning. Key takeaways: » The global mean score for responsible AI implementation is just 19/100, highlighting how far we have to go in protecting human rights in the AI era. » Despite many countries having national AI strategies, this doesn't automatically translate into responsible AI practices. The majority of the world's population lives in regions without sufficient safeguards against AI misuse. » Only 25% of countries have frameworks ensuring AI systems' safety, security, and reliability - a reminder of the work ahead. » Gender equality and cultural diversity in AI remain critically underaddressed. While 37 governments (including 6 in Africa) have initiatives promoting gender equality in AI, it's one of the lowest-performing areas in the index. What really impressed me was the scale of this study: 160 experts, 138 countries and jurisdictions, and 15 partner organizations contributed to this comprehensive assessment. The research team's commitment to creating truly global, measurable benchmarks for responsible AI governance is commendable - to read more, please follow: https://lnkd.in/du2J9Ct8 This isn't just a report - it's a wake-up call. The question now is: what kind of world do we want to build together? At AIxMedical, we're taking action to ensure responsible AI development in healthcare. We've launched a global survey to map AI adoption and ensure patient-centric innovation. Your expertise is invaluable - join us in shaping the future of AI in healthcare by participating in our survey [Link in comments]. Kudos to Rachel Adams and her team for this crucial work in decolonizing AI and establishing systematic, human rights-based benchmarks for responsible AI development. #ResponsibleAI #ArtificialIntelligence #DigitalInclusion #TechEthics #GlobalGovernance #HumanRights #HealthcareAI

As AI systems continue to be integrated into nearly every aspect of our lives, ensuring their safety, accuracy, and reliability is more important than ever. 🚨 The 2024 Global Index on Responsible AI evaluates how countries are embedding these key principles into their AI ecosystems to mitigate risks and build public trust. In the 2024 Edition of the index, we identified 34 government frameworks, 38 government actions and 97 non-state activities-including efforts from private sector, academia and civil society globally that ensured that these principles were embedded in AI ecosystems. But what exactly do these principles mean? 🔒 Safety: AI systems and tools must not introduce new harms or risks. Ensuring safety is essential to protect individuals and societies from unintended consequences. ✔️ Accuracy: AI must be free from errors. To achieve this, inaccurate data must be promptly rectified, ensuring that algorithmic outputs are both precise and correct. Accuracy is vital for trustworthy AI. ⚙️ Reliability: AI systems must consistently perform their intended function over time. Reliability ensures that AI delivers consistent and reproducible results, building long-term trust. By promoting these principles, the 2024 Global Index on Responsible AI provides valuable insights into how countries can foster responsible and ethical AI use. As we move forward with responsible AI development, prioritising safety, accuracy, and reliability is crucial to building a future we can all trust.
