We mobilize resources for communities worldwide to protect our shared planet and work toward a more equitable world.
About us
Global Greengrants Fund believes solutions to environmental harm and social injustice come from people whose lives are most impacted. Every day, our global network of people on the frontlines and donors comes together to support communities to protect their ways of life and our planet. Because when local people have a say in the health of their food, water, and resources, they are forces for change. For example, Global Greengrants grantees have protected the environment by creating new marine conservation areas (Chile), halting construction of megadams (Peru), passing new forest protection laws (Mongolia), and winning bans on plastic bags (Uganda). Grantees have restored coral reefs, mangroves, forests and sustainable farms. And grantees have transformed systems, such as the indigenous Sarayaku people of Ecuador, who won a precedent-setting case in which the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled that governments must obtain free, prior and informed consent from indigenous peoples before corporations can extract resources from their lands. GLOBAL GREENGRANTS IMPACT FACTS Because Global Greengrants supports grassroots action in the Global South, small amounts of money create disproportionate impact: • $100 can plant 250 trees in rural Tanzania. • $500 can re-seed 4,500 mangroves, virtual carbon sequestration machines, to protect communities in Honduras from rising sea levels and slow climate change. • $1,000 could provide native seeds to 20 sustainable farming co-ops in Ecuador. Industrial agriculture is one of the biggest engines of climate change. Learn more at www.greengrants.org.

Since 2021, Global Greengrants has funded over a dozen projects to help stop construction of the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) in Tanzania and Uganda. The pipeline would displace thousands, pollute ecosystems, and contribute to global climate change. Food security and access to food is essential to our survival on earth. And how we grow our food is a critical piece of the climate crisis – either contributing to the problem or to the solution. In fact, our current agricultural system is estimated to be responsible for nearly 30-50% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is why at Global Greengrants Fund, over one third of our grantmaking supports sustainable agriculture, resistance to industrial landgrabs, agroforestry, and smallholder agriculture – all forms of agroecology. We're also proud to be the fiscal home of The Agroecology Fund, a grantmaker supporting agroecological practices and policies worldwide. Get to know them: https://lnkd.in/e6uNQEp

In August 2023, the population of Ecuador voted through a national referendum to halt all current and future oil extraction in Yasuní National Park. Though the work to ensure compliance with the vote is still ongoing, the moment was a huge win for climate movements around the world. "We Indigenous land guardians bring millennia of forest expertise and, frankly, values that are far more in tune with what the planet needs in this season of crisis. Funders bring material wealth that can deploy to strengthen our organizations, advocate for national policies that value Indigenous guardianship, and keep our communities safe." A call for funders to better support the world's best conservationists--Indigenous Peoples. https://lnkd.in/gQmFFy7Z
