About us

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in the area that is today South Sudan since the 1970s, on a periodic basis. GIZ’s coordination office has been located in the capital, Juba, since 2010. GIZ works on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in the following three priority areas: Food and nutrition security and rural development Urban water supply and sanitation Rural development and good governance. In the field of food and nutrition security, GIZ and its partners are working to combat undernourishment and malnutrition among children and women and raising awareness for health issues. The German Government is supporting local water utilities in four towns and cities in ensuring public drinking water supplies and sanitation, while making these services affordable and accessible even for low-income groups. GIZ is involved in developing water companies and is training staff to operate the plants. To improve hygienic conditions in schools, sanitary facilities are being extended and schoolchildren made aware of the importance of hygiene. To develop rural regions in the long term, GIZ is advising and supporting selected rural districts, allowing them to deliver services in a more direct and needs-based manner. The capacities of the rural authorities are being developed, while the population (especially women) are being encouraged to get involved in planning and shaping their immediate environments. The German Federal Foreign Office is also supporting the implementation of the 2015 peace deal through GIZ. Registration information: https://www.giz.de/en/html/registration_information.html

☮️ ⚽ 🏃🏿♀Our project "Local Governance and Promotion of Peaceful Coexistence project" ( LoGo) recently hosted an engaging four-day Sport for Development (#S4D) refresher training in Terekeka County. The workshop brought together a diverse group of 25 participants, including teachers, students, members of local sports associations, footballers, and wrestlers 🎓⚽ 🤼♂. They delved into crucial topics like #GenderEquality, #ViolencePrevention, #Safeguarding, #Inclusion, and #Leadership, while also receiving sports equipment to bolster their S4D initiatives in the community. Consultant Andrew Oloo emphasized the transformative power of S4D, stating, "Our approach integrates value-based learning, equipping youth with essential life skills and fostering positive attitudes and behaviors, all contributing to a more peaceful community." 🗣️🤝 Dialogues between youth or sports organizations and local authorities promote a peaceful environment, while sports education activities (S4D) encourage gender equality and non-violent behavior. 🕊️ #Sports4Development #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

Hands-on workshop unleashes communication skills 📣 📸 ✒️ Recently, 26 technical experts from our governance and agriculture teams immersed themselves in a three-day workshop on #photography, #storytelling, and #presenting GIZ 🇸🇸 and its projects. With a good mix of theoretical instruction and practical exercises, the participants learned a lot about the art of capturing compelling group photos and action shots with their phones, practiced conducting interviews for success stories, and refined their presentation skills in front of a group. While the learning was taking seriously, we also had lots of fun! Cheerful laughter filled the room as we reviewed the photos taken for exercise and perfected our role plays! 🎭 A heartfelt thank you to our communications consultant and team for organising this insightful workshop and empowering our team with enhanced skills and knowledge! #Photography #ImpactCommunication #CapacityBuilding #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

We're empowering 18 reps from four Juba schools to reduce SGBV and promote respect and safety for women and girls. By challenging harmful gender norms and encouraging critical reflections on gender roles, we aim to reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). We also engage girls and men as well as women PTA members, valuing their experiences to spark meaningful dialogues with men and boys. Through this initiative, we're reaching 8 schools across Yei and Juba, impacting 8,000 participants - 3,360 men, 1,140 boys, 2,240 women, and 960 girls. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥? 📻✨ Fantastic feedback on radio talk shows in Yei and Magwi counties Partnering with local stakeholders such as Spirit FM and the County Health Departments, GIZ organized radio talk shows focused on #nutrition and #hygiene in Yei and Magwi counties from May 8th to June 19th, 2024. The shows were led by experts and were broadcasted live 10 times with 8 replays. Over 20,000 listeners were reached in Yei and across the borders of Yei River County, with people tuning in from as far as Uganda and DR Congo. Overall, the radio talk shows played a vital role in promoting healthier lifestyles, covering topics like: 👨🌾 Farmer Health: Many farmers neglect their own health despite growing nutritious crops, often selling high-quality produce while consuming the less nutritious ones themselves. The shows helped to inform farmers on #BalancedDiets. 💥 Impact of Conflict: Conflict in South Sudan has severely affected nutrition, with many people, including farmers, struggling to eat enough. This has exacerbated malnutrition in communities. 👩👧Mother-Child Nutrition and Hygiene: Despite a good food diversity in Yei, misconceptions persist about healthy eating habits as well as good breastfeeding practices and hygiene. The radio programs have been crucial in bridging these knowledge gaps. The vivid audience feedback 📞 highlighted the show's success in dispelling nutrition myths, encouraging meals with good food values and raising awareness about health challenges exacerbated by local conflicts. The media campaign initiative was realised together with implementing partner GOPA Consulting under the GIZ South Sudan Project ILIPS (Improved Living Conditions and Psychosocial Support in the Context of Forced Displacement) and complements in-person nutrition counselling trainings. 🍎🚰 💪 #PublicHealth #HealthEducation #GoodHygienePractices #FoodSecurity #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

🌍✨ Celebrating 13 years of South Sudan's independence! GIZ South Sudan has been committed to the region for over 50 years, with an office in Juba since 2010. Our team of national and international employees works tirelessly to support development amidst ongoing challenges like conflicts and climate change, which exacerbate food insecurity and displacement. Our initiatives focus on strengthening resilience with #Agriculture, #LocalGovernance, and #GenderEquality. We empower smallholder farmers with climate-adapted methods to enhance food production. We train local administrators, particularly women, to improve access to public services and foster community development. Through sports events and awareness raising, we promote gender equality and prevent gender-based violence, supporting women's networks and advocating for their rights. We recently started the Multi-Donor Action "ResPEct: Stop SGBV – Respond, Prevent, Educate!", jointly co-funded by the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) 🇩🇪 and the European Union 🇪🇺. The three-year project targets gender-based violence in South Sudan, where 65% of women and girls experience SGBV. It focuses on promoting social change and gender equality by strengthening counselling services, men's engagement in gender roles, and women’s groups with micro-projects for SGBV prevention. As we reflect on our journey in South Sudan, we remain dedicated to building sustainable solutions and supporting the nation's path towards peace and prosperity. 🌱💪 #SouthSudan #IndependenceDay #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAdaptation #GoodGovernance #GenderEquality #GermanDevelopmentCooperation

Development ➡️ revision ➡️ validation ➡️ implementation This is the process that leads to the elaboration of collective plans that guide climate-sensitive agricultural production, landscape restoration, agroforestry activities and income-generating ventures. In Aweil West and Centre Counties (Northern Bahr el Ghazal State), under a project funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, we recently conducted validation workshops to refine such plans for three locations: Maluil Akoong, Longwurkech and Nyikuala. At grassroots and policy levels, these workshops engaged a total of 112 participants, from community members to farmer unions representatives, local chiefs and administrative authorities. 🤝 The goal? To ensure the acceptance and commitment of everyone involved towards planned activities, clarifying roles and responsibilities before moving to the next stage: implementation! #ClimateResilience #SouthSudan

We’re both sad and incredibly proud to officially close one of our projects: “Strengthening Resilience for a Pro-Poor Basic Service Delivery“ (short: ReBaSe) 💧💙 🎉 Various stakeholders gathered for the closing event and celebrated the big strides we have made in making sure that especially citizens with low income in Western, Central, and Eastern Equatoria States have access to drinking water and sanitation. Younes Hassib, ReBaSe Project Manager, praised the teamwork among all staff, which was essential for achieving the ambitious goals. He emphasized how impactful the trainings in business planning and management were, and that water utilities like Yei achieved self-sustainability. 💪🏿 Managing Directors and the Board of Decentralized Water Utilities appreciated ReBaSe and the GIZ South Sudan team for their support and capacity building. They were enabled to reach thousands with #CleanWater, and to stand independently as decentralised water supply companies. Daniel Angelo Dagbayo, Executive Director of the umbrella organisation "Association for Water Utilities and Sanitation (AWASU)", highlighted the role of ReBaSe in unifying water utilities and fostering lasting partnerships. Once again thank you 🌟 to the ReBaSe Team, and congratulations to our partners and project participants for all they have achieved in strengthening the resilience of the communities by providing clean water and sanitation services! #GermanDevelopmentCooperation #WaterSustainability #CommunityDevelopment #CapacityBuilding Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ)

On June 15, 2024, we had a special #WorldEnvironmentDay celebration in Yambio 🌍🌳 The GIZ project “Food and Nutrition Security and Natural Resources Management“ (FONA) through our implementing partner Cordaid supported with supplies, helped in organizing, and one of our colleagues moderated the day. A fun highlight were the dancers and local artists who composed a song especially for the occasion! The day, which was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment of Western Equatoria State, commenced with a tree planting ceremony 🌱 after which speakers emphasised the importance of safeguarding Western Equatoria's natural landscape for future generations. Representatives from the Azande Kingdom, including the Prince and the Prime Minister, received tree seedlings, symbolizing a collective dedication to environmental conservation. The event culminated with a strong pledge to continue nurturing our planet and raising awareness about pressing environmental issues. 🌿 #GermanDevelopmentCooperation #TreePlanting #NaturalResourceManagement
