Loved meeting the women of Girls Who Listen Inc. at the Vox Media office last week. Thank you Markova Casseus for including me in this great panel and discussion!
Last week, my cohort of Girls Who Listen Inc. had the opportunity to visit the new Vox Media offices in Downtown Manhattan, engaging in a panel discussion with Markova Casseus @DevinCirillo @RobertoDumé @MegKonigsburg and @PhoebeRios, and getting to take a tour of Vox’s editorial brands (of which there are 18) including New York Magazine, Vulture, The Cut and The Verge. In the spirit of supporting other young women entering into the larger media industry (which encompasses much of music, film and TV), I want to share some of the major takeaways from our conversation with Vox execs: 1. All creative ideas are only as good as their ability to be sold. Find a way to tell the story of your concept to seal the deal. 2. Learn the “language” of media industries, and you will be able to communicate with its creatives. The language of design, the language of architecture…you don’t have to know how to create a blueprint to get into the room, but you need to know how to talk about one. 3. You should be constantly reading. Sometimes it only takes one sentence to spark a multi-million dollar idea. 4. Creative ideas often come from limitation. Embrace the parameters of a project and find new ways to work within it. 5. Envision your end goal as a “dream headline.” If your concept were to be displayed on the front page of the Times, what would it say? 6. Sometimes deadlines are the only way that you will feel satisfied with the amount of work you’ve put in. And that’s ok. Thank you to Kadijat Salawudeen for organizing this event, and to the incredible staff at Vox for taking the time to share their space and their wisdom.

Last week , I had a lovely experience with Girls Who Listen Inc. where I got to visit the new Vox Media in Downtown Manhattan. I throughly enjoyed learning at a panel discussion with professionals, Markova Casseus Devin Cirillo Roberto Dumé Meg Konigsburg and Phoebe Rios. During the event we got the opportunity to take a tour of Vox’s editorial brands (there are 18!) including New York Magazine, Vulture, The Cut and The Verge. As a young woman who believes in supporting other woman entering in the industry of music, entertainment, and media I want to share three major takeaways of the day. 1. Continuous reading is essential, as even a single sentence can inspire a multi-million dollar idea. 2. It’s important to learn the “language” of all departments within the media industry. You don't have to know how to create a blueprint to get into the room, but you need to know how to talk about one. 3. Creative ideas often emerge from limitations. Embrace the parameters of a project and explore innovative ways to work within them. Huge thank you to Kadijat Salawudeen for organizing this event, and to the incredible staff at Vox for taking the time out of their busy day to share invaluable insight.
