Investing in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities in Ethiopia.
About us
MISSION: Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that invests in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities. While most do not become professional athletes, some do; and training allows them all to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and enhance their personal economic opportunities. It also develops their sense of well being and personal power. Material support provided by GGRF includes, but is not limited to, funds for running shoes, training clothes, extra food ("calorie money"), coach subsidies, and other training-related expenses. GGRF also advises local and partnering organizations on gender sensitive issues and advocates for gender equity in all running programs and organizations. VISION: Girls Gotta Run envisions a world that empowers and invests in the exceptional initiative of young women who are working to establish their place in the world as competitive runners and leaders in their communities, who are finding strength, courage and power in their pursuit of excellence, and who are achieving their fullest potential in running and society.

Our Athletic Scholars take their #education seriously… these Soddo 12th graders were studying hard for the university entrance exam on a recent Saturday. We are proud to be part of their journey!

We are so excited to work with Project Redwood to expand our Life Skills programming for adolescent girls who are empowering themselves through running and education. Thanks to our amazing Board Member and Stanford University GSB alum Gelila Bekele for her leadership on this partnership!
We are proud to announce that Project Redwood is awarding grants to 27 inspiring #nonprofits in 2024. With deep thanks, we recognize the generous support of so many Stanford University Graduate School of Business alumni that enables us to distribute $1,145,000 to these deserving organizations. These grantee awards reflect noteworthy milestones for Project Redwood. Now in our 17th grant cycle, we: - Received a record number of applications. - Awarded the highest level of funding in our history. - Owe special thanks to our 2023 Visionaries who donated $600,000 in matching funds, an act that inspired others to give generously and enabled us to achieve this record level of grant making. As always, a rigorous review process led to the selection of these 27 organizations that all support our mission to provide education, training or job creation to help lift individuals out of poverty. When hunger is an issue, women and girls are always the hardest hit. And it's an issue across East Africa, including in our Ethiopian communities. That's why our programs address so many SDGs -- empowering girls also means addressing food insecurity, poverty, inequality. To learn more and get involved, visit www.girlsgottarun.org
