Investing in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities in Ethiopia.
About us
MISSION: Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that invests in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities. While most do not become professional athletes, some do; and training allows them all to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and enhance their personal economic opportunities. It also develops their sense of well being and personal power. Material support provided by GGRF includes, but is not limited to, funds for running shoes, training clothes, extra food ("calorie money"), coach subsidies, and other training-related expenses. GGRF also advises local and partnering organizations on gender sensitive issues and advocates for gender equity in all running programs and organizations. VISION: Girls Gotta Run envisions a world that empowers and invests in the exceptional initiative of young women who are working to establish their place in the world as competitive runners and leaders in their communities, who are finding strength, courage and power in their pursuit of excellence, and who are achieving their fullest potential in running and society.

It is almost time for one of our favorite days... #InternationalDayoftheGirl! Every October 11, we love seeing the world celebrating and empowering girls. Our mission 365 days a year is to give Ethiopian adolescents the tools they need to stay in school, postpone marriage to adulthood, and pursue their own dreams. Join us in our IDG 2024 event - Beyond the Finish Line! Prizes for the top teams in 3 categories include Ethiopian coffee, scarves and baskets. #beyondthefinishline #running #girls https://lnkd.in/efNN4G5d

Education = access, and every girl deserves that right. That is at the heart of our mission, and our programs work: 97% of our program participants finish Secondary School vs. only 16% in the communities we serve.
Education is not a privilege. It is a fundamental RIGHT. 😔Yet, around 63% of the youth and adults lacking basic numeracy and literacy skills are women. All women and girls have the right to learn how to read and write, but they continue to be left behind when it comes to education. Let us support them to reach their full potential.

We strongly condemn the murder of Rebecca Cheptegei, the third elite runner to be murdered in Kenya. All suspects were intimate partners of the athletes. No impunity for perpetrators. The trend of #femicide must be stopped. Statement from UN Women Africa: https://lnkd.in/dXHnb-y3

🌟 Have you seen the news? Girls Gotta Run Foundation and our amazing Coach Fatiya of Bekoji are featured in the July issue of Ethiopian Airlines’ inflight magazine, Selamta (right next to the Dibaba sisters!) Excited that word is spreading about Coach Fatiya and our work empowering girls through running & education. #GirlsEmpowerment

What description comes to mind when you hear the word “girl?” Leader. Athlete. Strong. Scholar. Brave. Smart. Role Model. These are the words our Athletic Scholars in Ethiopia, ages 12-18, use to describe themselves and one another. Generational Change does not happen overnight, but we are in it for the whole race!

Did you know... a full 98% of participants in GGRF programs avoid child marriage, vs. an average of just 60% who are unmarried at 18 years old in the communities we serve? Proud to empower girls and their families to postpone marriage.
It’s time to #ENDChildMarriage. Child marriage is 🚨 A human rights violation ❌ A harmful practice
