“This week the world has experienced the three hottest days on record,” António Guterres announced today. 2023 was the hottest year ever recorded. ⚠️This is a stark reminder of the escalating threat of climate change. Its consequences put our ecosystems, economies, and communities all around the world at risk. ❕Climate change is more than an environmental issue - it is a matter of security and peace. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events not only damage our planet, but also exacerbate social and political tensions, leading to climate-induced conflicts. 🇺🇳 In September, the international community will come together at the #SummitoftheFuture to increase efforts in climate action. Enhancing climate resilience and increasing sustainable development is one of the main goals of the Pact for the Future, which will be decided on during the Summit.

My internship at the Germany Mission to the 🇺🇳 United Nations has come to an end. Reflecting on the intense time at Germany in the UN, I have so many highlights that will continue to shape my worldview and my understanding of the importance of democracy and multilateralism. The biggest insight I got was through participating in the negotiations of the Committee on Information. I got to experience multilateralism first-hand through intricate negotiations - and looong meetings. Another highlight: Meeting high-level decision-makers, and accompanying the press to a meeting of Minister of Defence Pistorius with Secretary-General António Guterres. The great collegiality at Germany in the UN was always greatly appreciated. Especially the team work within my team will always be missed. Thank you Hannah Maes, Patricia Patz, Jenny and Holger Dreiseitl for all the trust and the opportunities you gave me!

🇺🇳And that's a wrap on the 2024 High-level Political Forum for Sustainable Development! After two weeks of discussing initiatives for a better and faster implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, #HLPF2024 came to a close yesterday. Here are some key takeaways: 🇩🇪 Germany stands firmly behind the #2030Agenda for sustainable development. The #GlobalGoals are our roadmap for a livable planet and a life with dignity for all. Global partnerships and multilateral cooperation are the pathway to full implementation. That's why it's important to build broad alliances. The large German delegation of parliamentarians, civil society, the private sector and young people, led by Parliamentary State Secretaries Dr Bettina Hoffmann, Dr. Bärbel Kofler and Claudia Müller underlines our will to strengthen these partnerships. Meet some of the members of the German delegation below and learn about their priorities for the #HLPF. 🌍 Synergies are key. We must consider the Global Goals across all policy areas to tackle complex challenges. This will allow us to build holistic solutions that combat global inequalities and the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. ⏰ The Summit of the Future is a historic opportunity to strengthen this holistic approach of the 2030 Agenda across all areas of international cooperation. We need to act now for #OurCommonFuture. “𝐀 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 - 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐞 - 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥. The UN Charter provides clear principles for how we work together. However, many structures of global cooperation were established decades ago - and are no longer fit for purpose. Conflicts and crises abound. We need to make sure that UN is fit for the future. Change is needed on many levels to ensure a more peaceful, more prosperous, and fairer future for all. 🤝 The Summit of the Future will culminate in the Pact for the Future, an inter-governmentally negotiated document that outlines how we work towards effective global governance on different topics: ➡️ Sustainable development and financing for development ➡️ International peace and security ➡️ Science, technology, innovation and digital cooperation ➡️ Youth and future generations ➡️ Global governance 🇳🇦🇩🇪 Germany and Namibia are the co-facilitators of the Summit. As a co-facilitators, Germany and Namibia lead the consultations on the Pact for the Future ahead of the Summit in September. These preparations started several months ago and include negotiations amongst UN Member States and consultations with civil society and other stakeholders. Germany is proud to have been entrusted with such responsibility. 🔜 Stay tuned! Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll dive deeper into the Summit of the Future.

🇺🇳 What happens at the United Nations General Assembly? How do decisions get made in the Security Council? What do negotiations between Member States look like? 👩🎓 To better understand how the #UN works, over 80 high school students from various cities in Germany and Italy held a Model United Nations Conference in Berlin last week. The opening ceremony took place in the Federal Foreign Office, with speeches from German diplomats and thought-provoking questions from the students in the audience. 🌍 The event focused on the influence of colonialism on contemporary society and questions of just development. The students were assigned to different Member States and had to represent their respective countries in the negotiations. 🤝 Conferences such as this one underline Germany’s commitment to strenghten #YouthParticipation and showcase the importance of fostering #Exchange between young people and decision makers. Thank you to the students and teachers for the interesting event!

🌍 Six years until 2030 - and only 15% of the Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs are on track. The world needs renewed urgency now. The SDGs are the cornerstone of the #2030Agenda and reflect an understanding that development everywhere must integrate economic growth, social well-being and environmental protection. They offer the most practical and effective pathway to tackle the causes of poverty, violent conflict, human rights abuses, climate change and environmental degradation. 🇺🇳The High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development is the largest global forum to review progress and advance implementation of the SDGs. It takes place every year in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, this year from 8-17 of July. 🇩🇪 Germany is a staunch supporter of the #GlobalGoals#HLPF2024 is a moment to take note of the progress that has been made - and to take decisive action for further implementation in order to safeguard a livable future for all.
