In a report on its ad hoc visit to Greece, which took place from 21 November to 1 December 2023, published today together with the response of the Greek authorities, the Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) once again urges the Greek authorities to improve the conditions in the country’s immigration detention facilities, and especially the newly-built and EU-funded centres on the Aegean islands, while ensuring that foreign nationals are treated both with dignity and humanity.

Our expert Lê Phan-Warnke met with colleagues from across Europe in Vilnius this week to discuss how we can empower young people in vulnerable situations to cope with the multiple crises of our time. "Especially those with intersectional identities, such as LGBTIQ , refugees and migrants, people of colour, young women or young people with disabilities, are disproportionately affected by crises on the housing and labour market, by exploitation, poverty and rising costs of living. Structural discrimination prevents them from building the economic, social and political capital that others can draw on to overcome difficult times," says Lê Phan-Warnke. "In order to make legislative, regulatory and policy frameworks more legitimate and evidence-based, and to meet the challenges of the most vulnerable, these groups need to be seen and heard. Young people should therefore be involved in the planning, formulation, implementation and evaluation of such measures. Their voices must not only be taken into account, but must also influence the outcomes of decision-making processes. Participation is a human right!" #SocialRights are essential for the protection of human dignity. The German government should therefore accept the outstanding Articles of the Revised European Social Charter, in particular Articles 30 and 31, and take more effective measures to protect all people from #poverty and social #exclusion. This is crucial in view of the cost-of-living crisis and the rise of the extreme right. #SocialJustice #HumanRights
🚨 An important statement on social rights from the Council of Europe issued in Vilnius by the COE-FRA-ENNHRI-EQUINET Platform The Platform calls on governments: 🔷 to reaffirm their full commitment to the protection and implementation of social rights as guaranteed by the European Social Charter system 🔷 to strengthen the Charter’s system by ratifying the Revised Charter and accepting additional provisions, in particular those that reinforce the right to housing and the right to protection against poverty and social exclusion Read the full text here : https://go.coe.int/KN9YA

🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 #LGBTIQ* rights are human rights! 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 Human rights prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. We pay tribute to all activists then and now! #Stonewall55 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ #CSD #Pride #Pridemonth #LGBTQIA #LGBTI 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Amnesty International summarised the background to #Stonewall in 2019 to mark 50 years of Stonewall: Fifty years after Stonewall riots: Pride, protest and a hunger for equality Fifty years ago, nine New York police officers stormed the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street and began aggressively searching the bar’s patrons. They demanded identification and arrested anyone they suspected of being gay or dressed in a way that didn’t conform to mainstream society’s narrow understanding of gender. The events that followed would spark the modern LGBTI rights movement, inspiring the first LGBTI Pride parade down Christopher Street. In 1969, it was still illegal to be gay in most parts of the US. For many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, nights out at places like the Stonewall Inn were the only times where they could openly be themselves. The venue was known for its celebration of inclusion and also became a safe space for sex workers and the homeless. In the early hours of 28 June 1969, as police started harassing everyone in the bar and dragging them into the backs of squad cars, the Stonewall patrons didn’t just protest a police raid on a bar: They were protecting their home. How did the Stonewall Riots start? There is still some debate over the exact moment the riots started. But people who were there that night agree that three women of colour, Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Stormé Delarvarie were pivotal in inspiring the other guests to rise up against the police. Police raids at the Stonewall Inn were by no means a rare occurrence. In fact, regardless of where they were or how openly they expressed themselves, many LGBTI people lived in constant fear of being arrested for “crimes against nature”, being attacked or losing their jobs and livelihoods if they were ever discovered. In the face of such blatant oppression and violence, a few voices of resistance ignited that first spark. Like many transgender people at the time, Marsha and Sylvia faced constant harassment, particularly from the police. Since it was illegal for people assigned male at birth to wear women’s clothes (and vice versa) they and other trans women and drag queens at the Stonewall Inn were forced into the bathroom, strip searched and arrested if it was revealed that they were born with male characteristics. https://lnkd.in/eHrjuwAW
