About us

The Georgia Composite Medical Board is the state agency that licenses physicians, physician assistants, respiratory care professionals, perfusionists, acupuncturists, orthotists, prosthetists, auricular (ear) detoxification specialists, genetic counselors, cosmetic laser practitioners, and pain management clinics. The Medical Board also investigates complaints and disciplines those who violate The Medical Practice Act or other laws governing the professional behavior of its licensees.

  • GCMB wants to welcome David W. Retterbush, MD as GCMB's newest Board member. He was sworn in by Governor Brian Kemp on June 6, 2024. Dr. David Retterbush is a Board-Certified General Surgeon practicing in Valdosta, Ga at South Georgia Medical Center Health since 1982. He was initially in private surgical practice with his father, William C. Retterbush, MD, until his father’s retirement in 1987. Dr. Retterbush is currently employed by SGMC Health as a hospital-based surgeon and has served in numerous leadership positions there including Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Retterbush graduated from medical school in 1977 from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga and went on to complete a General Surgery residency program at the University of Louisville in Kentucky under Hiram C. Polk, Jr., MD. He is a Fellow of the American College of  Surgeons and the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Retterbush previously served as a board member on the Georgia Composite Medical Board from 2008  to 2021 and was Chairman of the GCMB from 2014 to 2015. Dr. Retterbush is married to Denise, a Registered Nurse, and they have three children, Lisa Shelton, Patrick Retterbush, MD, a Dermatologist/MOHS surgeon in Athens, Ga, and Aaron Retterbush, a Dermatology PA in Atlanta. He has numerous hobbies including wildlife and sports photography and  has won numerous awards for his work. In addition, he and wife have made multiple surgical mission trips to Antigua, Guatemala with Faith in Practice where he was the surgeon and his wife Denise a OR circulator. Dr. Retterbush and his wife enjoy traveling and spending time with their 6 grandchildren.

  • This past week several board members and staff attended the 2024 FSMB Annual Meeting and AIM Meeting in Nashville, TN. Dr. Alexander Gross, who's on his 5th term as board member with the GCMB, was presented with the 'Leadership Award' in recognition of outstanding exemplary leadership, commitment, and contribution in advancing the public good at the medical board level. Dr. Matthew Norman, who's on his second term with the GCMB, gave a presentation on ' Addressing IV Hydration, Ketamine and other Unregulated Treatments' to the medical board representatives in attendance. The GCMB is honored to have these two as board members representing the State of Georgia and the many medical professionals that work so diligently for the citizens of Georgia.

    Congratulations to Dr. Indran Indrakrishnan! Yesterday, the Georgia State Assembly House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution recognizing Tuesday, February 20th, 2024, as Dr. Indrakrishnan's Day at the State Capitol. This well-deserved honor acknowledges his remarkable and deeply valuable years of dedicated service to the State of Georgia. Dr. Indrakrishnan, a respected gastroenterologist, physician leader, and adjunct professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, has played a pivotal role in advancing initiatives that positively impact Georgia. Dr. Indrakrishnan was the first physician of Asian heritage appointed by any Governor of Georgia to serve on the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce. He dedicates his time as a Board member to supporting the development of medical education programs and initiatives aimed at increasing the number of physicians and healthcare practitioners in underserved rural areas of Georgia. Additionally, Dr. Indrakrishnan is actively involved in multiple charitable organizations. He has received numerous honors from local, national, and international entities for his outstanding service and achievements. Join us in celebrating our wonderful Board member, Dr. Indrakrishnan, and his exceptional contributions and achievements!

  • Board extends tele-prescribing flexibility until May 1 The Georgia Composite Medical Board’s telemedicine rules have been in effect since 2014, but the Board eased its rules due to the pandemic. As of May 1, 2024, all licensees should refer to the Medical Practice Act and Board Rules for proper prescribing practices in Georgia.
