An international team of geoscientists recently undertook multiple in situ benthic chamber lander experiments to measure abyssal sediment community O2 consumption (SCOC) in the Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI)-D license area of the Clarion–Clipperton Zone (CCZ) where polymetallic nodules cover extensive areas of seafloor. They consistently found that more O2 was accumulating in the chambers than was being consumed, resulting in net O2 production. About us
The Geological Society of America (GSA) unites a diverse community of geoscientists in a common purpose to study the mysteries of our planet (and beyond) and share scientific findings. Members and friends around the world, from academia, government, and industry, participate in GSA meetings, publications, and programs at all career levels, to foster professional excellence. GSA values and supports inclusion through cooperative research, public dialogue on earth issues, science education, and the application of geoscience in the service of humankind.

A recent study has stirred up the debate on when the Central American Seaway closed, a pivotal event that altered oceanic circulation between the Pacific and Atlantic and connected the Americas. Traditionally thought to have closed around 3 million years ago in the Pliocene, new evidence suggests the Panamá Arc might have collided with South America much earlier, during the Middle Miocene (15-13 million years ago). An international research team conducted a comprehensive analysis of three stratigraphic transects across the Uramita suture zone and revealed lower offshore to slope conditions in the seaway from 16.4 to 15.1 million years ago. This supports the Middle Miocene closure theory, although deeper parts of the seaway likely persisted in western Colombia, complicating the story. On this date in 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. The ADA was the world's FIRST comprehensive civil rights law for people with disabilities. Are you a geoscientist with a disability? You can connect with the IAGD, a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to improving access and inclusion for people with disabilities in the geosciences here: theiagd.org/ Check out the field trip they are leading after GSA Connects 2024! People are flocking to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics (XXXIII Olympiad). The City of Light has been a cultural, historic, and scientific draw for centuries. Read “Exhibiting life history at the Paris Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle (nineteenth–twenty-first centuries)” from GSA Special Paper 535 “Museums at the Forefront of the History and Philosophy of Geology: History Made, History in the Making.” https://lnkd.in/giinPCy6 In this paper, Claudine Cohen analyzes “how the organization of buildings and collections within the Paris National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), and their successive transformations up to the present, have reflected concepts and controversies over [the] history [of life].” Interested in this sort of topic?
