About us
Our vision is simple: a world where women, girls, trans, and gender nonconforming people worldwide enjoy safety, security, justice, access to resources, and full enjoyment of their rights. Gender Funders CoLab is a network of private philanthropic foundations that are committed to exploring and experimenting with different mechanisms to achieve more effective ways to resource gender justice. Gender Funders CoLab is an intentional network that encourages members to challenge the status quo through learning by doing, building trust between members and feminist movements, sharing learnings through collaboration, and embracing innovation. Funding feminist movements funds more than just gender equality. Women and girls do not live single-issue lives, and feminist movements are on the frontlines of intersectional issues that range from environmental justice, LGBTI rights, disability rights, democracy and transparency, Indigenous rights, and so much more. By creating a stronger and more effective private philanthropic sector, Gender Funders CoLab can enable quality funding that further strengthens long-lasting feminist movements on the ground, delivering change. Our membership consists of some of the leading private foundations. Collectively, they leverage more than $200 million annually toward advancing women’s human rights.

“Another kind of change is moving from narrow thematic funding - thinking about how are we going to change individual women… to really thinking about what are the interlocking systems of oppression that actually need to change and so going from changing women to actually changing systems.” Another highlight moment from ‘Our Power Together’ event - Althea Anderson, Program Officer for Gender Equity from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation talking about the shift she’s seen in the past 10 years from funders.

We are loving this article on funding narrative ecosystems by our friends (and CoLab alumni!) Mandy Van Deven and Jody Myrum 💪 'Changing beliefs and behaviors at scale cannot be achieved by a single movement, organization, or campaign. Narrative change is a fundamentally collective endeavor, and the transformation we seek to achieve requires a broad set of actors to work together over time to advance a shared vision.'
